Vice Ganda’s no-makeup stunt cheered, jeered

After removing her makeup during the Thursday episode “It’s Showtime,” comedian-TV host Vice Ganda received mixed reactions from netizens for her anti-bullying stunt.
Telling an audience member the importance of self-worth and confidence, Vice Ganda removed her makeup and hair extensions on stage during the noontime show’s “AdVice Ganda” segment.
Asked by audience member “Pamela” how to avoid being judged by other people, Vice Ganda said the girl should not be ashamed of herself, before asking for wet tissue from the crew.
“Pakikitaan kita kung paano ipagmalaki ang sarili, hindi matakot tanggapin ang sarili mo nang hindi ka natatakot sa panghuhusga ng mga tao (I will show you how to be proud of yourself, how to not be afraid of accepting yourself and of other people’s judgment),” she said.

Vice Ganda started removing her makeup, fake eyelashes, and contact lenses and said: “Sa TV parang ang kinis ko ‘di ba, pero ang kapal ng make-up ko (My face looks smooth on TV, but the truth is I have a very thick layer of makeup on).”
Vice Ganda also removed her hair extensions and told the audience that it was the first time that she did such thing.
“Ito ang mukha ko. Ito si Vice Ganda (This is my face. This is Vice Ganda),” she said.
When she was done with removing her cosmetics, Vice said she does not care about what other people think of her, and even dared the audience to take photos of her and post them online.
“Ngayon, picture-an n’yo akong lahat. Ikalat n’yo sa Internet,” she said. “Pagtawanan n’yo ako, laitin n’yo ako, sabihin n’yo lahat ng gusto n’yong sabihin. Wala akong pakialam.”
(Now, take a picture of me. Spread it all over the Internet. Laugh at me, criticize me, say whatever you want to say. I don’t care.)
“Dahil kahit magasapang ang mukha ko, mataas ang hairline ko, maganda ako (Even if the texture of my face is rough, and despite my high hairline, I am still beautiful),” she added before facing Pamela and telling her she’s beautiful, too.
Vice also posted a picture of him without make-up on her Instagram account with the caption “#ProudToBeMe.”
Saying that they were inspired by the comedian, some social media users even posted photos of themselves without makeup and filters from photo-editing applications.
“Vice Ganda is an example of a TV personality who isn’t afraid to reveal his own self,” said @ShainaLouise23 on Twitter.
“I still love him! Very motivational yet so inspiring!” Icy Ongkingco (@39_icy) tweeted.
But while many praised Vice for her no-makeup act, there were also others who criticized him as “hypocrite,” citing supposed cases of bullying that the host committed during her shows and concerts.
“Ironic how Vice Ganda tells other people to be [themselves], when he’s the one who always make fun of other people’s physical appearance,” @ArtieeKow said.
