Female contestants ‘sell’ themselves on ‘The Choice’
After “The Voice,” the talent tilt for singers, now comes “The Choice,” another competition on TV, this time for women who want to date any of its four male celebrity panelists.
Most of the time, in real life, it’s the women who choose which of their suitors to go out with on dates. Well, the tables have been turned, and it’s now the girls who vie for a chance to date the boys!
Is this a sign of female empowerment—or a convulsive spasm presaging the end of the world as we know it? After watching “The Choice,” we are inclined to believe that it’s time for all of us to head for the hills!
Men choosing women can’t be a sign of female empowerment, because the male celebrities on the TV show’s panel hold all of the aces, so they’re the ones who are “empowered.”
So, why would the lovely and sexy female “suitors” agree to compete for their favor? Because the guys are celebrities? Because the women are in desperate need of their 15 nanoseconds of fame and TV exposure? Whatever the motivation, it’s a pretty sad state of affairs all around.
But, it certainly isn’t new. It’s the stuff of which beauty contests are made of plus other TV tilts like “The Bachelor,” where around 20 otherwise desirable and self-respecting women vie for the nod of an ostensibly pluperfect male.

Of the four allegedly romantic outings recorded on-cam at the end of the telecast, only one looked promising in terms of a possible follow-up rendezvous, so it looks like celebrity dating isn’t the sure-fire way to go!
The most instructive part of “The Choice” is the portion where the girls engage in a sort of “speed dating” variant, during which they have only a few seconds to “sell” themselves and their unique attributes to the smug male celebrities they hope to impress and date.
It’s interesting to see which plus points convince the guys to turn around and take a better look at them: Big butts and bosoms are particularly potent come-ons, but so are an interest in sports and a hearty sense of humor!
Which makes us wonder if the male celebs’ fantasy of a perfect date is a romantically compliant bedmate who’s also a best buddy—and a stand-up comic!
We trust that, after witnessing the slim pickings on the show, women will opt not to join it and play by its rules, because they’re sexist and demeaning—and the so-called male celebrities on the panel aren’t even great catches, anyway!
Well, that stands to reason, because if they were God’s gift to women, they wouldn’t need to participate in “The Choice” to make sure that they would have a date to show off and canoodle with on Saturday night!
PS: We see from a trailer for the show that “The Choice” occasionally has a “flipside” variant, in which it’s the female celebs who do the choosing from a number of buff and beefy aspirants. We have yet to catch that alternative show, but it should be interesting and instructive to see the guys doing the pitching and begging—for a change!
