Michael V., Manilyn Reynes on how ‘Pepito Manaloto’ keeps humor amid cancel culture
Sixteen years since it first aired, the long-running GMA sitcom “Pepito Manaloto: Tuloy ang Kuwento” continues to stay relevant by carefully handling sensitive topics while keeping its signature wholesome humor intact, according to lead stars Michael V. and Manilyn Reynes.
During an interview with the media on Thursday, June 4, for the show’s anniversary special, Michael V. said the sitcom has remained conscious of its jokes, especially in today’s climate where audiences are more critical of offensive humor.
“Consciously kasi maingat talaga, wholesome kasi yung show eh. So, dapat ‘yung mga topics na dini-discuss mo, at saka the way you deliver your jokes, medyo dapat wholesome din talaga,” he said.

Despite this, the comedian said the show does not shy away from difficult or taboo subjects.
“Madalas namin tina-tackle ‘yung mga topics na minsan taboo sa ibang mga sitcoms,” he shared. “We are like walking on the fine line, pero not crossing it.”
“Kaya walang walk in the park itong Pepito pagdating sa mga sensitive na topics. Although, hindi pa rin namin iniiwasan. We just handle it differently,” he added, noting that much of the “Pepito Manaloto” team also works on the gag show “Bubble Gang.”
According to the actor-comedian, the show’s longevity has also helped its writers become more experienced in approaching delicate issues.
“Hindi na kami basta bara-bara, bumabaril sa dilim. Alam na namin ‘yung target namin,” he said.
Reynes, meanwhile, said the sitcom stands out because its stories still carry lessons despite tackling controversial themes.
“Kapag tina-tackle ninyo, hindi siya lumalabas na nega,” she said. “Natatawa ka na, pero may lesson.”
When asked how family-centered comedy remains effective in connecting with viewers, Michael V. described family as the “basic structure ng community,” saying audiences naturally relate to stories about family dynamics regardless of background.
Reflecting on the show’s 16-year run, the actor credited the dedication of the entire cast and production team.
“Hindi lang ng mga artista, hindi lang ng creative group. At saka kahit ‘yung mga staff and crew. Dedicated talaga sila,” he said.
The stars also opened up about lessons they have learned from their characters over the years.
Reynes shared that Elsa and Pepito’s relationship inspired her real-life marriage with husband Aljon Jimenez, particularly the importance of spending quality time together.
“Hindi dapat nawawala ‘yung date-date,” she recalled Michael V. advising her, adding that she and her husband now make time for regular dates.
She also noted that some of the show’s storylines about aging and health resonate with her personally.
For Michael V., playing Pepito has taught him patience.
“Umeedad na kasi ako sa totoong buhay. Nararamdaman ko na ‘yung init ng ulo, umiiksi na pasensya ko,” he admitted.
He said many of Pepito’s storylines revolve around testing the character’s patience, which has also influenced him off camera.
“So parang from there, natututo si Michael V. na i-apply ‘yung script sa totoong buhay niya,” he said.
“Pepito Manaloto: Tuloy ang Kuwento” is marking its 16th anniversary with a special two-part episode; the first one aired on May 30 and the second episode airs today, June 6.
The anniversary storyline follows Pepito, Elsa, and the rest of the Manaloto family on a beach getaway in Sariaya, Quezon, for a PM Mineral commercial shoot. What begins as a relaxing trip turns chaotic with unexpected reunions, travel mishaps, gossip and a surprising romantic revelation.
Guest stars in the anniversary special include Inah de Belen, Teejay Marquez, Ashley Lopez, Phi Palmos, Maureen Larrazabal and Ron Angeles. /ra
