In a world of film adaptations dominated by familiar storylines, “Wicked” defies viewer’s expectations with a fresh take on female friendships and on-screen chemistry. Exploring the themes of self-individuality and companionship, this highly anticipated musical promises a fantastical world-building experience and heart-rending performances.

“Wicked” follows the story of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a young woman misjudged because of her green skin, who build an unusual friendship with Glinda (Ariana Grande), a popular young lady gilded by privilege and ambition who has yet to discover her true heart. Showcasing both the differences and similarities between the lead characters, the film does a great job of mixing emotions and vocals.

Despite receiving mixed reactions upon her casting, Grande proves that she is a force to be reckoned with as she brings a unique personality to Glinda, blending vulnerability with a playful facade. Grande’s portrayal, evidently seen in her rendition of “Popular,” gives the audience a sort of Elle Woods-esque take of Glinda, unapologetically unafraid of embracing her own femininity. She’s the heart of this musical film, as her comedic timing shines in every scene that makes one realize that she is not only gifted with vocal possess but with a distinct wit as well.

Meanwhile, Erivo becomes the soul of this adaptation. Her ability to convey emotions with her eyes and vocal range resonates with power and humanity. Erivo did not hold back in releasing every high note that goes straight through the roof, which successfully elicits resounding applause from the theatergoers after her “Defying Gravity” musical number. Both actresses’ extraordinary vocal control will push the audience to tears of joy.

On the other hand, Jon M. Chu, known for his work in “Crazy Rich Asians,” remains true to his vision to elevate female portrayal onscreen. With “Wicked,” Chu delivers a jolly take without sacrificing the original tone of the story, which both caters not only to the old fans but newcomers as well.

“Wicked” does not only treat its viewers with visually appealing and melodious performances but also with the message that one’s fulfillment does not lie in accepting that you need to change yourself in order to fit in, but in accepting that you are different and you have to carry on with that uniqueness.

Grande and Erivo’s portrayals ring true to the film’s message that the true definition of friendship is to amplify each member’s individuality without losing the essence to foster deep connections with each other. Elphaba and Glinda’s unlikely personalities became the very same tune that binds their sisterhood.

“Wicked” is the friend you need—the musical that’s worth cheering and clapping for, and its spell will begin casting on the big screen starting today, Nov. 20.
