Aside from a new crown, the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) has unveiled what it touted to be “the universe’s first sustainable sash” for the 71st edition of the pageant in January 2023.

The sustainable sash, revealed on Miss Universe’s official Instagram account on Friday, Dec. 23, is made in collaboration with U.S. based  The Sash Company.

According to the MUO, the sash is made from 100% post-consumer recycled fabric and thread and with ethically-produced rhinestones. The organization added that the sash is created in a bid to remain firm in its commitment to sustainability and protecting the environment.

“We hope our commitment to sustainability will reduce the overall amount of plastic and waste in the environment. This is one small step of many we hope to make in the future as small actions by corporations and organizations will have the greatest impact on making a greener future for all,” the MUO said in the caption.

Philippines’ bet Celeste Cortesi is vying for the country’s fifth Miss Universe crown in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S. on Jan. 14, 2023. Reigning titleholder Harnaaz Sandhu of India will crown her successor at the end of the pageant. EDV
