Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter has opened up about his “complicated relationship” with his younger brother, singer Aaron Carter whose long battle with drug addiction and mental health issues ended with his death on Sunday (Manila time).

On Instagram, Nick said that he has always loved Aaron despite their differences, with a hope that his “baby brother” would be set free from his demons.

“My heart is broken. Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed,”  said Nick.

“Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know. I love you Chizz. Now you can finally have the peace you could never find here on earth…. I love you baby brother,” he further said, calling him with his pet name.

Nick’s Instagram post included several pictures of himself and Aaron when they were little, with either of them holding on to the other as they smiled to the camera.

And while the pictures showed the two of them seemingly very close to one another, it wasn’t always the case.

In 2019 , Nick and another sibling, Angel, filed a restraining order against Aaron due to his “increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child.”

Nick cited this in seeking a restraining order against Aaron, who it was reported had been talking to sister Angel on FaceTime on Aug. 7 of the same year telling her that he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and that he had thoughts of “killing babies” and “killing Lauren Kitt,” who is Nick’s then pregnant wife.

The “I want Candy” pop singer subsequently tweeted that Nick was a “serial rapist”.

Prior to that, in August 2017, he also opened up about his own sexuality following his split from girlfriend Madison Parker.

Aaron soared to fame at the turn of the millennium with several hit albums. On Sunday, the troubled 34-year-old singer was found dead in his bath tub at his residence in Lancaster, California.
