Andrea Torres could not seem to contain her happiness over the praise she has been receiving for her performance as Sisa in the GMA series “Maria Clara at Ibarra.”

The Kapuso actress did an emotional take of the Noli Me Tangere character in a nearly-six-minute scene in the episode of “Maria Clara at Ibarra” yesterday, Nov. 2. The scene showed Sisa slowly losing her sanity as she searches for her sons and delivers the line, “Crispin! Basilio! Mga anak ko, nasaan na kayo?”

Torres earned praise from netizens for giving “justice” to the role of Sisa, and for portraying the character in a way that also highlighted Sisa’s agony as a mother who lost her children. Some said the performance deserves an award.

“Andrea Torres owns the role of Sisa. She changed an entire generation’s perception of who Sisa is. She’s not just a mere BALIW (crazy person) for the boomers, millennials [and] Gen Zs. She was a mother — loving [and] amiable. She represents the unfortunate, the ridiculed [and] the brave,” one @fozmichael_ said.

“Andrea Torres owned tonight’s episode. She gave justice to the role Sisa. I can feel her emotions. Everything about this scene was perfectly executed,” another netizen, @_writerjisoo, praised Torres.

One @ampaonipao, meanwhile, believes that National Hero Jose Rizal, who wrote “Noli Me Tangere,” will likely be proud of how Torres portrayed Sisa.

“ANG GALING NI ANDREA TORRES AS SISA. IF RIZAL WERE TO BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW, HE WOULD BE SO PROUD WITH HER PORTRAYAL AS SISA, GOOSEBUMPS MALALA,” the netizen said.

(Andrea Torres was so great as Sisa. If Rizal were to be alive right now, he would be so proud [of] her portrayal as Sisa, severe goosebumps.)

“I’ve seen so many takes of Sisa’s cry for Crispin and Basilio while descending into madness from previous Noli [Me Tangere] films [and] plays, but Andrea Torres’s might be my most favorite take so far. Hell hath no fury like a mother whose child has been scorned,” another viewer, @It_IsMyKate, said.

Torres was ecstatic over the praises she got online, as per her Twitter post, also yesterday. She also admitted being glad to have changed viewers’ perception of the character.

“Ay grabe sasabog ang puso ko. Sobra kong naappreciate,” she told fans. “Lalo na pag sinasabi niyo na ‘di na lang basta baliw si Sisa sa paningin niyo. That’s the best,” she said.

(Wow, my heart is about to explode. I really appreciate it. Especially when you say that Sisa is no longer just a crazy person to you. That’s the best.)

“Maria Clara at Ibarra,” which premiered last month on GMA Network, is a fantasy drama series based on Rizal’s works “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo.”

It tells the story of the Gen Z nursing student Klay (Barbie Forteza) who gets transported into Rizal’s works after reading “Noli Me Tangere.” The series stars Dennis Trillo as Don Crisóstomo Ibarra and Julie Anne San Jose as Maria Clara.  /ra
