MANILA, Philippines — A partylist lawmaker is pushing for the “long overdue” recognition of actress Nora Aunor by nominating her as a National Artist for Film.

Under House Resolution Number 1352, ACT-CIS Partylist Rep. Nina Taduran said Aunor, “despite very humble beginnings, overcame all obstacles and reached the pinnacle of the film industry—excelled first in singing and eventually showed to the whole world her  thespian talents.”

“Throughout her film career spanning more than five decades, Ms. Nora Aunor has brought honor to her craft and to the Philippines through her acting awards,” Taduran said in the resolution.

On the international stage, Taduran said Aunor also won in the Cairo International Film Festival, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Asian Film Awards, Sakhalin International Film Festival, and the St. Tropez International Film Festival, among others.

Further, Taduran also pointed out that Aunor was also conferred the “Gawad Para sa Sining” by the Cultural Center of the Philippines and is the first actress to be honored with the “Ten Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Services” award.

“These awards and recognitions are unmistakable testaments to the extraordinary prowess of Ms. Nora Aunor and affirm her place in the pantheon of Filipino artists,” Taduran said.

“Ms. Nora Aunor rightfully deserves to be named as a National Artist for Film,” she added.

Under Proclamation No 1001, s. 1972, the category of Award and Decoration of National Artist for Filipinos who have made distinct contributions to arts and letters was created.
