Hollywood star Arnold Schwarzenegger is backing California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s order to require wearing face masks and called those turning it into a political issue as “absolute morons.”

Schwarzenegger took to Twitter yesterday, June 19, to share his stance, saying that this was “100% the right move” and that “this will help us beat this terrible virus.”

“The science is unanimous—if we all wear masks, we slow down the spread and can reopen safely. It’s not a political issue. Anyone making it a political issue is an absolute moron who can’t read,” he emphasized.

Schwarzenegger’s tweet was in response to the US state governor’s post, which read, “NEW: Californians are now REQUIRED to wear face coverings in public spaces. Together — we can slow the spread. Do your part. Wear a mask.”

Sentiments on wearing face masks vary across the US, with others insisting that the practice is useless as the virus can “pass through” masks anyway and that enforcing it infringes on people’s freedom, while others maintain that it should be practiced.

Public health experts, specifically those from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), urge people to wear “face cloth coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.”

Also with the help of medical experts, the BBC earlier today, June 20, debunked several false claims on the alleged ineffectivity of face masks, such as that it allows for “carbon dioxide toxicity” and that it deprives the body of oxygen.

Schwarzenegger has been vocal on his views on the pandemic, warning the public as early as March that people should “stay at home as much as possible.”
