Kristoffer Martin finds dabbling in music ‘intimidating’
Although acting is where Kristoffer Martin wants to make a mark, he said he will always remain open to venturing into other fields in show biz.
At the moment, the 23-year-old Kapuso talent also has his sights on becoming a recording artist.
“I want to try other things, especially while I’m still young. That’s why when GMA Records offered me a music-related project, I grabbed the opportunity,” he told reporters at a recent pocket interview for his new single, “Paulit-Ulit.”
Singing isn’t entirely new to him. As a 12-year-old child dreaming to make it in the entertainment industry, Kristoffer joined the reality talent tilt “Little Big Superstar” in 2007. “I love singing, and I used to write songs back in high school,” said Kristoffer. “It’s something I want to do. I wouldn’t do it if it didn’t interest me.”
As its title suggests, “Paulit-Ulit,” which is the official theme song for the local airing of the Korean drama series “Fight for My Way,” is about falling in love over and over again. “It’s about young love, crushes,” added Kristoffer, who will be part of a coming Cinemalaya entry.
The song is a feel-good, midtempo pop—fitting for someone still relatively new to music. “Because I’m just starting out, it’s best if I take the safe route. I don’t think I can do experimental stuff right away,” he admitted.
But given the chance, he said, he’d like to do trap music or R&B. “I like the music of Zayn and The Weeknd. I hope to do something similar, but OPM, of course,” said Kristoffer, who was last seen in the action-fantasy series, “Super Ma’am.”
For his next recording, Kristoffer plans to be more involved in the creative process. “The reception to my song has been good so far. Hopefully, I can follow it up with my own composition. I can write lyrics, then maybe collaborate with other artists for the arrangement,” he pointed out.
One of the first songs he has written is titled “A Girl,” which he performed at the debut party of his ex-girlfriend Joyce Ching a few years back.
“When it comes to writing songs, I’m inspired by my personal experiences and the stories my friends share with me,” said Kristoffer, who also plans to take a refresher course in playing the guitar.
Kristoffer admitted that dabbling in music is a bit “intimidating” because there are many good artists out there.
“But I hope I eventually find the direction I want to take,” he said.
