Ai-Ai happy for Met restoration
Comedienne Ai-Ai delas Alas is pleased as Punch that the Metropolitan Theater is being restored to its former glory, befitting a Philippine art deco landmark.
“Ang galing (It’s impressive),” she told the Inquirer. “Bongga!”
Not too many people know that the star of the comedy film “Bes and the Beshies” got her start in the biz at the Met. “I worked as the secretary of the Met’s theater group,” she recalled.
She even had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her role in the Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” directed by National Artist Rolando S. Tinio, for Teatro Pilipino.
“I had no dialogue,” she recounted. “Tagadala lang ako ng kopa ng alak (I was a goblet holder). I was director Rolando Tinio’s favorite because I had beautiful legs and big boobs! He loved putting me in tight corsets!” —BAYANI SAN DIEGO JR.
