Binibining Pilipinas-International 2017 Maria Angelica “Mariel” de Leon has apologized for her biting tweets disparaging Mocha Uson’s appointment as assistant secretary of the Presidential Communications Operations Office.
De Leon, the daughter of veteran actors Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong, issued a statement via Twitter apologizing for her remarks. “Like all Filipinos, I love my country and I hope for a better Philippines,” she said. “With or without a crown, I will continue to show my love for the nation by discussing issues that affect us.”
De Leon expressed optimism that amid Uson’s appointment, the Philippines would unite for its progress. “I apologize to anyone who was offended as it was not my intention to do so. I wish Asec Mocha Uson success in her job. Moving forward, I will use this title as a platform to promote unity for the country,” she tweeted.

De Leon had flared the temper of Uson’s followers for her tweets–which were subsequently deleted–declaring Uson as unqualified for government service.
“Biased and disrespectful. She insults those who are against her. I’m not for her, I’m not for the other side (whatever that may be),” she had tweeted. “I love my country so it breaks my heart to know someone like her got a position in the gov’t. There are so many [other] unbiased, educated, and respected (and respectful) people who deserve her place.”
