WATCH: Fil-Am wows ‘The Voice’ coaches
A Filipino-American singer impressed the judges of the award-winning United States reality singing show “The Voice” during her blind audition which was aired on Tuesday, October 6 (Manila Time.)
Amy Vachal had three out of four coaches turn their chairs during her rendition of the 1930’s classic “Dream A Little Dream Of Me.”
Vachal, who is the niece of Cebu representative Gwendolyn Garcia but is residing in Brooklyn New York, got a standing ovation from judges Gwen Stefani, Pharrell Williams, and Blake Shelton.
The only coach who did not turn his chair for Vachal was Adam Levine of the band Maroon 5.
Levine was apologetic for not turning around because his team was already full.
“Not only am I sad that I didn’t get to turn for you, but you could win this whole thing,” he said.
Stefani heaped praises for Vachal, comparing her to a Disney princess.
“First of all, I don’t have a beautiful Pocahontas, fairy princess, angel-like singer on my team…You’re creative with the way that you’ve performed and you seemed like a real honest artist,” Stefani said.
“I can really help you on this journey, because I did this already. I feel like we could have such a connection,” she added.
Williams, the music producer and artist behind the hit song “Happy,” started to woo Vachal by asking what genre she wanted to pursue.
Vachal replied, saying she wants to “blur the lines” and make a “new hybrid,” citing Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, and Sam Cooke as her musical influences.
“I would be unbelievably appreciative to have the opportunity to aid you in that journey. Let me be the guy that can help you explore that side,” Williams said.
Meanwhile, an excited Shelton exclaimed, “Please, Lord! Please pick me,” even while Vachal was performing.
“I’m already sad right now, just thinking that I don’t probably seem like the right guy for you. But let me say this, I know that I’m looking at a superstar. I’m so impressed, please pick me,” Shelton said.
After listening to judges’ comments, Vachal made the decision and picked Williams as her coach.
