“We hope to earn P1.2 billion at the box-office,” declared Metro Manila Development Authority chairperson Francis Tolentino, after he announced the eight movie entries that will be competing in this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival in December.

Included on the list is “Beauty and the Besties,” to be directed by Wenn V. Deramas and to feature Vice Ganda and Coco Martin. It will be a coproduction of Star Cinema and Viva Films.

The horror film “Death and Senses,” by Randolph Lonjas is also part of the lineup. It will feature Rayver Cruz, Lotlot de Leon, Jayson Gainza, John Lapus and Ian Veneracion.

“Haunted Mansion,” to be directed by Jun Robles Lana for Regal Entertainment, will be the big-screen debut of teen star Janella Salvador. It will also feature Marlo Mortel and Jerome Ponce.

Aljur Abrenica will top-bill “Hermano Puli,” which will be directed by Gil Portes and to be produced by Teamworks. It will also feature Alessandra de Rossi and Enzo Pineda.

Quezon City mayor Herbert Bautista and Kris Aquino will be working for the first time in “Mr. and Mrs. Split,” to be helmed by Antoinette Jadaone and produced by Star Cinema.

The romantic film “Walang Forever,” with Dan Villegas at the helm, will feature Jennylyn Mercado and JM de Guzman. It will be produced by Quantum Films.

On the 9th and 10th places are Erik Matti’s “Conman,” starring John Lloyd Cruz and Jeffrey Jeturian’s “Lakambini,” to feature Rocco Nacino and Lovi Poe.

The films on the 9th and 10th slots will be fielded if one of the Top 8 entries backs out or drops out of the race.

“The last five years had been record-breaking,” said Tolentino. “Thanks to the members of the executive committee for their help, as well as the producers and writers who tirelessly come up with interesting stories. Also, this will not be possible without the participation of the movie-goers, who continue to patronize our films despite the rise in the cost of movie tickets.”

Tolentino, who will serve his last term this year as MMDA chief, said he would leave the festival “in good hands and in good condition.” He failed to name his successor. The MMDA is the organizer of the annual MMFF. With a report from Bayani San Diego Jr.
