‘Salat’ docu leaves voters with food for thought

JULIA Louis-Dreyfus stars as a female vice president in “Veep.”

On the eve of the elections, GMA News and Public Affairs leaves voters with food for thought: Elect public officials with integrity and those who can help send all children to school and stop them from going hungry.

This is the message of the powerful Reel Time documentary “Salat,” which airs tonight at 10 on GMA 7.

First aired on GMA News TV, “Salat” tells the story of a 10-year-old girl named Mary Rose—who falls asleep from hunger inside her classroom and is forced to borrow soap from neighbors out of poverty.

The world’s oldest and most prestigious award for electronic media, the University of Georgia’s George Foster Peabody Award, declared “Salat” one of its few chosen recipients this year.

‘The Fighters’

Following a two-year CNN investigation, the two-hour documentary “The Fighters” chronicles the struggles of Philippine human rights pioneer Cecilia Flores-Oebanda in her journey to protect children from sex trafficking and convince boxing star Manny Pacquiao to join her as a fighter in the battle against modern-day slavery.

Since founding her antitrafficking organization, Visayan Forum, in 1991, Flores-Oebanda has helped more than 70,000 victims or potential victims of human trafficking.

“The Fighters” airs on CNN International on two consecutive nights, May 17 and 18.

‘Veep’

“Veep” follows the whirlwind day-to-day existence of US Vice President Selina Meyer (played by Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus) as she juggles her busy public schedule, puts out political fires, and defends the president’s interests, even as she tries to improve her dysfunctional relationship with the chief executive.

The Emmy-nominated HBO comedy series returns for a second season tomorrow at 10 p.m. on HBO/HBO HD, with new episodes airing weekly at the same time.

‘Foster Child’

In time for Mother’s Day, Cinema One will air Brillante Ma. Mendoza’s “Foster Child” tonight at 8.

The country’s entry to the Directors’ Fortnight section of Cannes in 2007, “Foster Child” top-bills Cherry Pie Picache and Uge Domingo.

‘Israel in Focus’

To mark Israel’s 65th anniversary as an independent nation this year, The 700 Club Asia will launch “Israel in Focus,” a five-day celebration of the close historical, spiritual and cultural ties between the Biblical Holy Land and the Philippines, called the first and oldest Christian nation in Asia.

The shows air starting tomorrow until May 17 at 11 p.m. on GMA News TV.

‘Relocated Spirits’

“Relocated Spirts,” episode 7 of “My Ghost Story Asia,” features the supernatural experiences of Gil and Menchie Tabije after their uncle moved into their house.

It turned out that their uncle had been keeping some supernatural beings, who followed him everywhere.

Episode 7 airs on May 16 at 9:30 p.m. on Bio Channel and encores May 17, 11 p.m.; May 23, 9 p.m; and May 24, 11:30 p.m.
