Johnny Mathis, 89, is set to stage his last four shows in April and May before he shelves his microphone and retires from performing live after nearly seven decades.

The American balladeer’s retirement was announced by his team through a statement released on Thursday, March 27 (Philippine time).

“As many of you may already be aware, Johnny Mathis is approaching his 90th birthday this year. So, it’s with sincere regret that due to Mr. Mathis’ age and memory issues which have accelerated, we are announcing his retirement from touring and live concerts,” the statement read.

“Johnny Mathis and his entire staff send their heartfelt gratitude to all Mathis fans worldwide for your continued love and support of his music! It’s truly been ‘Wonderful, Wonderful,'” it added, making a reference to the singer’s 1958 hit song.

Mathis’ representative, Robert Scott, further said in a statement to USA TODAY that the singer’s demanding travel schedule has “taken a toll on his body.” No further details on Mathis’ health, however, were immediately disclosed.

“His voice is still wonderful, and it’s a shame that he won’t be able to share that with his audiences after May 18,” Scott was quoted as saying. “He knows deep down that it’s time to call it a day.  He’s performed 69 consecutive years now without ever missing a beat.”

Mathis has been touring since 1956, banking on his vocal prowess that earned him several Grammy nominations and a lifetime achievement award from the music academy.

Some of his biggest hits are “Misty,” “It’s Not for Me to Say,” “Chances Are,” ”When Sunny Gets Blue,” “Warm & Tender,” “What Will Mary Say” and “Gina.”

Mathis, who was initially scheduled to stage several more shows in July, August, October and November this year, will perform his four final shows in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, on April 10; Shipshewana, Indiana, on April 26; Santa Rosa, California, on May 10; and Englewood, New Jersey, on May 18.
