Alfred Vargas attacks poll rivals’ looks at campaign sortie

Showbiz insider and talent manager Ogie Diaz was seemingly shocked when a video of actor-turned-politician Alfred Vargas from a campaign sortie went viral on social media.
In the video, Vargas was seen allegedly mocking the physical appearances of their political rivals in the upcoming midterm elections.
The actor is running for councilor in the 5th district of Quezon City.
Diaz even shared the video in a Facebook post, where Alfred was on stage surrounded by his supporters and fellow candidates.
“Baka gustong linawin ito ni Alfred Vargas. Puro nega ang comment sa kanya [Maybe Alfred Vargas wants to clarify this. There are so many negative comments about him],” said the showbiz insider in his post.
Diaz added, “Bakit dumating na raw ata sa ganitong point ng pamumulitika?” [How did he reach this point in politics?]
In the video, Vargas can be heard joking that he and his brother, Rep. PM Vargas, prefer to choose good-looking candidates, while they referred to their political opponents as looking like drug addicts.
“Kami ni Cong. PM, pag namimili kami, pinipili namin magaganda’t gwapo. Kasi yung titingnan ninyo, ‘yung mga nakukuhang leaders ng mga kalaban namin, mga mukhang adik [Congressman PM and I, when we choose, we pick the beautiful and handsome ones. Because if you look at the leaders our opponents get, they look like addicts],” said Vargas, with the audience laughing in the background.
He continued, “Totoo di ba? Tsaka puro may mga utang. Hindi nagbabayad. Totoo, ‘di ba? Kilala namin ‘yung mga leaders ng kabila eh. Hindi ba, bro? Kaya sa tingin ko, Colonel, marami kayong ikukulong na mga adik.” [It’s true, right? And they all have debts. They don’t pay them. It’s true, right? We know the leaders of the other side. Don’t we, bro? So I think, Colonel, you’ll be locking up a lot of addicts.]
During the same event, Vargas also reportedly made harsh remarks against Rose Nono Lin, the head of the Rose Lin Foundation.
The video was first shared by the Kilusan Kontra Korapsiyon group and quickly garnered strong reactions from netizens.
Meanwhile, in 2021, Diaz first expressed his disappointment with Alfred’s decision to abstain from voting on the ABS-CBN franchise renewal issue while he was in Congress.
