Two months after bringing home the Best Supporting Actor plum at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), Ruru Madrid clarified that he has no hard feelings toward Sue Ramirez and Cristine Reyes, after the actresses went viral for their reaction to his winning the award.

Ramirez and Reyes, who were tapped to present the Best Supporting Actor award at the MMFF 2024 Gabi ng Parangal last December, caught the attention of netizens with their seemingly disappointed expressions before announcing Madrid as the eventual winner for the movie “Green Bones.”

Aside from Madrid, also up for Best Supporting Actor were David Ezra, Kokoy de Santos, Jhong Hilario, and Sid Lucero — who was nominated for his performances in “The Kingdom” and “Topakk.” Ramirez and Reyes worked with Lucero on “The Kingdom” which also starred Vic Sotto and Piolo Pascual.

In a sit-down interview with Ogie Diaz which was uploaded on his YouTube channel on Friday, February 14, Madrid said he understood where the actresses were coming from since Lucero was nominated in two categories, which according to the Kapuso star, was a testament to his acting abilities.

“Inaral ko nang mabuti ‘yung video. Feeling ko — kahit ako naman ‘yung presenter noong gabi na ‘yun — si Kuya Sid [Lucero], napakahusay na aktor at meron siyang dalawang entries,” he said. “So malamang ako, kahit hindi ko pa napapanood ang ibang pelikula, ang ie-expect ko ay malamang, si Sid.”

(I studied the video carefully. My feeling is that if I were also the presenter that night — Kuya Sid is a great actor and he was nominated for two entries. So for me, even if I haven’t watched those films, I would expect that Sid would win.)

Additionally, the “Lolong” star said he bears “no hard feelings” against Ramirez and Reyes considering that they had both worked with Lucero in “The Kingdom,” which automatically makes them root for their co-star.

“Noong nakita ko ‘yun, hindi ako nakaramdam ng sama ng loob d’un sa mga nagbasa. Feeling ko, hindi naman nila mine-mean na ‘yun ang nasabi or ‘yun ang naging reaksyon nila,” he said.

“Normal [dahil] may dalawang entries [si Sid] and nakasama nila sa isang pelikula. So ‘yun ang iro-root nila. No hard feelings. For me, as long as masaya tayong lahat, nakita ko ang award na ‘to, wala pong problema talaga,” continued Madrid.

(When I saw it, I was not upset at the presenters. I feel like they didn’t mean what they said or how they reacted. It’s normal to feel that way because Sid had two entries and they worked with him. So they would root for him. No hard feelings. For me, as long as we’re all happy, I see the fruit of my hard work, there is no problem.)

Madrid added that he is aware that not a lot of people were aware of his acting abilities before “Green Bones.”

“Siguro kasi hindi rin po talaga nila inexpect dahil aminado ako na [bago] ang pelikula na ‘to, hindi naman na-validate or nakita ng mga tao ang kakayahan ko bilang isang aktor (I guess not a lot of people expected me to win because before working on this film, they didn’t see anything that would validate my skills as an actor),” he said.

Madrid, who starred as Xavier Gonzaga in the MMFF 2024 film, is also joined by Best Actor winner Dennis Trillo, Alessandra de Rossi, Michael de Mesa, Sofia Pablo, Wendell Ramos, and Ronnie Lazaro.

The Zig Dulay-helmed film brought home a total of six awards including Best Picture and Best Actor, and was one of the highest earning entries in the 2024 festival.
