Disc jockey Jellie Aw received the backing of women’s rights group GABRIELA in her fight for justice after her alleged mauling at the hands of her fiancé, Jam Ignacio.
On Wednesday, Aw posted photos of her bruised face on social media, caused by Ignacio’s alleged attack while they were inside the car. She was only able to leave the car and seek help when the car’s RFID sticker failed to register at a toll gate going north. Ignacio, however, managed to escape.
Gabriela, on Thursday, said it supports Aw’s fight for justice against her fiance.
“We recognize the courage it took for DJ Jellie Aw to publicly speak out about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her fiancé. We stand behind her in her fight to hold Jam Ignacio accountable for his crimes,” said GABRIELA Secretary General Clarice Palce in a statement.
The organization stressed that many women struggle to report incidents of harassment and assault due to fear, shame, and concerns for their safety—especially when the perpetrator holds power or influence.
GABRIELA reiterated its commitment to amplifying voices that challenge the culture of silence surrounding violence against women and children (VAWC).
“Ms. Jellie’s experience resonates with thousands of women and children in communities who suffer abuse within and outside their homes. It is paramount that we unite to end VAWC, including rape and sexual exploitation, which has seen an alarming rise, particularly among young women and girls,” Palce stated.
As part of its advocacy, GABRIELA spearheads the local campaign for One Billion Rising (OBR), a global movement against gender-based violence, urging advocates to participate in or organize similar initiatives to amplify calls for justice and pressure the government to take decisive action against VAWC.
“Rise with us and lend your voice to the call to end violence against women and children. Rise for freedom from abuse and exploitation. Rise for justice,” Palce said.
Ignacio, who was previously in a relationship with actress Karla Estrada, got engaged to Jellie in November of last year when they were just four months into their relationship.
Meanwhile, Ignacio and Estrada became a couple in June 2019 and broke up sometime in July 2024. The latter hinted in one of her interviews that their separation was not “friendly,” saying Ignacio remains to be the only ex-boyfriend that she had whom she was not on good terms with.
