Eleven years since it happened, Marian Rivera shared the backstory of her viral cover of Rihanna’s “Unfaithful,” admitting that it was so funny given how she fumbled with the lyrics of the song.
During the recent celebration of their 10th wedding anniversary organized by their fans club, Team DongYan, Rivera was asked by her husband, Dingdong Dantes, “What’s your favorite meme of yourself?” as part of the random Q&A they were playing.
“Meme? Story of my life… Bigyan niyo ako ng chance (Give me a chance), music please,” uttered Rivera, reenacting her viral performance and eliciting laughter from the audience.
The “Balota” star confessed that it also makes her laugh every time she remembers how she performed the song.
“Tawang-tawa kasi ako doon. Galing ako ng taping noon, sobrang puyat ako nun, sabi ko, ‘Hindi ko alam itong kantang ‘to, bahala na ‘to.’ Tuwing nakikita ko ‘yun, natatawa ako sa sarili ko,” she shared.
(I laughed at it too much. I came from a taping at the time and lacked sleep; I said, ‘I don’t know this song, but then I’ll take care of it.’ Every time I see that, I laugh at myself.)
Rivera remarked that her performance is now redeemed by her daughter Zia, who recently trended with her performance of “Rise Up.”
“Ayun lang, nabawi naman po ng anak ko (But then, my daughter has now redeemed that),” stated the actress.
Rivera’s performance of “Unfaithful” at the now-defunct show “Party Pilipinas” has sparked several internet memes over the years given that the actress was “out of tune” and sang the wrong lyrics.
Released in 2006, “Unfaithful” is one of Rihanna’s hits, topping charts in different countries. The single tells the story of a woman who regrets cheating on her partner.
