When self-centered stars blow their own horns

/ 01:47 AM September 15, 2012

To become a star, a new talent needs to be supremely confident in his looks and abilities. Before the fans can love him, he has to love himself first, right?

Trouble is, some starlets and stars hit the self-love ball way out of the ball park, with embarrassing results and consequences—as these quirkily quotable quotes prove:

Barbra Streisand: I hate tooting my own horn, but after Steven Spielberg saw my movie, “Yentl,” he said, “I wish I could tell you how to improve on your picture, but I can’t—it’s the best film I have ever seen since ‘Citizen Kane!’”

Cybill Shepherd: As a teenager, I crept around on eggshells because people kept telling me that I was so incredibly beautiful that I could destroy men!

Stunning racehorse

Julie Newmar: I’m magnificent! I’m 5’11”, I weigh 135 lbs, and I look like a stunning racehorse!

Jane Fonda: I look really fabulous for my age!

Matthew McConaughey: I’m wicked, I’m sexy, I’m heaven!

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Why do people make fun of me because I am the biggest, strongest and most beautiful man in the world?

Jean-Claude Van Damme: A guy like me, I can walk on the street and 20, 30, 40 girls, they want me!

Always the star

Rob Lowe: In the movies, I was never an extra, I was never a spear-carrier, I was always the star. Always!

Ringo Starr: This is an actual bloody legend in front of you. A legend!

Bob Saget: If you’re really funny, you’re really funny. I’ve been funny since I was 4.

Michael Bolton: Macho guys feel threatened by me!

Sylvester Stallone: I built up my body to carry my brain around.

David Hasselhoff: I’ve got taste. It’s inbred in me.

David Geffen: When you have as much critical mass as I have, even if you do nothing, you make an enormous amount of money!

Alana Stewart: Men think I’m beautiful and terrific. They take me to dinner and tell me how wonderful I am. It’s fun!

Pamela Lee Anderson: I was in Hollywood with no money, and all these men wanted to do this and that for me. They wanted to put me in the movies, they wanted to marry me.

Threatening

Sharon Stone: If I was just normally intelligent, I could probably get away with it. But, I’m fiercely intelligent, and that’s threatening!

James Woods: I was a straight-A student all the way. I took the Stanford-Binet IQ test, and I was told 180 was the highest it would go. Well, I got them all right, I didn’t miss a single one. My score was 180—plus!

John Barrymore: My only regret in the theater is that I could never sit out front and watch me perform!

Great movies

Samuel L. Jackson: During an audition, the guy I was reading with got lost, because he was so busy watching me!

Rebecca De Mornay: I’ve made great movies. “Risky Business” still stands up, it’s timeless. They study it in film school.

Yul Brynner: Of course, “The Magnificent Seven” would have been nothing without me!

Bruce Willis:  Yeah, I’ve made some stupid movies. But, I like my work in every film I’ve done!
