Waiting for Hilda’s return

KORONEL. Can show today’s stars what good acting is all about.

NATALIA Uy, fruit trader: “I was a child of the ’70s, and I grew up watching the films of my favorite director, the late Lino Brocka. I am also a fan of his protégés, Hilda Koronel and Joseph Sytangco. I wonder where they are now. I hope a producer or director will help them stage a comeback and show today’s stars what good acting is all about.”

Other views:

Dante Ruiz, medical doctor: “The images on the TV screen during and after the recent raging monsoon rains were just like the ones seen in past calamities: The same scenes, only the faces of those involved were different—residents of landslide-prone areas refusing to evacuate to safer ground; the  lack or absence of life-saving devices for rescue operations, and heaps of garbage. Kailan tayo matututo?”

Jojo Calderon, housewife: “The risk that the people behind “Please Be Careful With My Heart” took in casting the untested tandem of Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap as lead stars is paying off with the high ratings it’s getting. This proves that televiewers are now putting more value on simple and easy-to-follow storylines, with characters they can relate to, and with less popular leads who have nevertheless proven themselves to be exceptional actors. More power to the drama series!”

Gorgonio Caing, 84-year-old ex-government employee: “This is in response to a previous item in this section on the barrage of product promotions, teleserye trailers and celebrity testimonials in between segments of popular drama series. May I add that this is also true in morning and evening newscasts?

“Which government agency can we write to report these obvious abuses? Admittedly, commercials are the main sources of income of TV and radio stations—but, a logical compromise should be reached to serve both the networks and their viewers well.”
