Female characters have a way of stealing the narrative and capturing the hearts of the people watching them, whether they are the lead or just a supporting character.
Here are the movies releasing this March, and though not all have a female-led cast or a woman-centered narrative, we are sure you can still find your “bejeweled” in between these stories.
Damsel
They say a prince charming should save a damsel in distress, but this damsel only has herself to rely on after her prince lures her into a trap and trades her for a dragon. This isn’t your typical fairytale, as it is about a girl who holds the sword, fights a giant creature, and endures the dangers for herself alone.
Streaming on Netflix exactly on International Women’s Day, March 8, Millie Bobby Brown takes on another fearless role as she brings the determined and courageous Elodie to life. Solidifying the cast are Angela Bassett, Robin Wright, and more, which will make this survival story something that is worth seeing, especially for the independent “girlies.”
3 Days 2 Nights In Poblacion
Centering on the highs and lows of female friendship, Two childhood best friends, Gabbi (Jasmine Curtis-Smith) and Charlie (Barbie Imperial), now all grown up, reunite to make up for their seven years of being apart. Their fun and spontaneous friendship led them to plan a trip on the party streets of Poblacion. In the middle of their enjoyment are some secrets from the past waiting to ruin the fun.
Premiering in Philippine cinemas on March 13, this quirky film is directed by RC Delos Reyes and features JM de Guzman, Kakai Bautista, Mercedes Cabral, and Lady Morgana.
Immaculate
One can’t speak about women’s contributions to society, without mentioning the nuns. Nuns symbolize the delicateness of women and their ability to uphold a vow to dedicate their lives to religious services and contemplation. Despite becoming a nun is now considered to be a traditional and unconventional career option for women, they still adhere to the importance of women’s work.
Scheduled for a theatrical release on March 22, Immaculate follows a devout woman named Cecelia in a remote Italian convent, whose secluded life is shattered by sinister secrets and a spiritual crisis. This psychological horror sees a nun struggle with a pregnancy omen that blurs the line between a test from God and punishment from the devil.
Coming from the bliss of a romantic comedy, Sydney Sweeney goes a hundred degrees and takes center in this dark, twisted narrative that is sure to make a mark on the audience, specifically women who like their story somehow unhinged.
Kung Fu Panda 4
Opening in cinemas on March 6, Kung Fu Panda 4 is the fourth installment of a very familiar franchise and it is set to introduce a new ally that will not just charm the kids but those adults who are young at heart as well.
Po the Dragon Warrior (Jack Black) is once again tapped to show his bravery and incredible martial arts abilities for his new role as a Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace. However, he must first learn more about his new responsibility and fight the formidable and evil witch, Chameleon (Viola Davis). Along his quest, the courageous warrior finds his new comrade, Zhen (Awkwafina), a cunning and quick-witted corsac fox. Together, they will work to defend the Valley of Peace.
Spy x Family Code: White
After capturing the hearts of anime lovers, especially the girls, because of her adorableness and naughtiness from the manga and animated series, Anya Forger is back through the Spy x Family Code: White movie adaptation.
Debuting in Philippine cinemas on March 13, Loid Forger, alias Agent Twilight, discovers that his Operation Strix cover as a family man has been blown, so he attempts to stop getting replaced by helping Anya win an Eden Academy culinary competition. This sends them on a quest to discover the recipe that will help them win, but they encounter a series of events that would jeopardize world peace. The Forgers family will seize every opportunity to save the world and win Anya’s school competition.
Bob Marley: One Love
For fans of biopics, Bob Marley: One Love brings the life and music of an icon to screen who inspired generations through his message of love and unity. Premiering in local cinemas on March 13, this biopic will not just celebrate the legacy of the Jamaican reggae singer (Kingsley Ben-Adir) but also those who are behind him, his family, particularly his wife Rita (Lashana Lynch).
Exhuma
Here’s for the Korean drama and movie fans, Teaming up for the first time, South Korean superstars Lee Do-hyun and Kim Go-eun lead this dark and thrilling occult movie. Releasing on March 20, Exhuma is set to give the same feels as The Conjuring, as shaman duo Hwa Rim and Bong Gil are summoned to help a family from LA who are experiencing a series of strange occurrences that are signaling an evil longing to be released.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
Every fan of the franchises Godzilla and King Kong will take delight over this new crossover. Featuring a new adventure and battle in the monsterverse, Godzilla and Kong are forced to fight an unidentified enemy concealed within our planet, endangering both their lives and ours. Hitting local cinemas on March 30, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire explores the titans’ pasts and the secrets surrounding Skull Island and beyond. Starring Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry, the epic battle continues.
