Trends come and go, but the classic hits of Apo Hiking Society live on. With chart-topping melodies hot-wired into the souls of Filipinos, the legendary band’s members, Jim Paredes and Boboy Garovillo, are celebrating 50 golden years of friendship and music in “50 Years Solid Gold,” the Apo’s anniversary concert at the Newport Performing Arts Theater on Nov. 17.
With enduring songs like “Panalangin,” “Awit ng Barkada” and “Batang-Bata Ka Pa,” Apo’s legacy has been ingrained in the landscape of Original Pilipino Music or “OPM,” a term coined by the late Danny Javier, one of the band’s original members.
Apo has released over 200 tracks and 27 albums in a span of half a century, with two successful tribute albums produced in 2006 and 2007 featuring young bands.
