The upcoming local remake of the 2018 Korean feature “Keys to the Heart” has recently dropped its official trailer, and featured Zanjoe Marudo playing the role of son and brother to the characters of Dolly de Leon and Elijah Canlas, respectively.
Marudo portrays “washed-up” boxer Joma, who, during a difficult time in his life, suddenly encountered his mother, who he hasn’t seen for a long time. In the trailer, when asked if he still hasn’t forgiven his mother, Joma replied, “Wala akong nanay (I don’t have a mother).”
After Sylvia (de Leon) approached Joma, the following scene showed the latter’s first meeting with his younger brother, Jayjay (Canlas). Jayjay, who has autism, was shown to be masterful in playing the piano.
“[P]inapakinggan lang niya ang isang kanta nang isang beses, kaya niyang patugtugin nang plakadong-plakado (He only listens to a song once, and can already play it exactly the way it should sound),” spoke Sylvia of her younger son.
The trailer for the drama-comedy film also teased the growth in the relationship between the brothers, and, seemingly, also between Joma and Sylvia, who expressed how grateful she is to have been reunited with her older son. The trailer further showcased memorable scenes from the original film directed by Choi Sung-hyun.
The roles of Marudo, Canlas, and de Leon were originally brought to life by award-winning actors Lee Byung-hun (“Inside Men”), Park Jeong-min (“Deliver Us from Evil”), and Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung (“Minari”), respectively.
The Kerwin Go-helmed local adaptation, which will be available on streaming platform Netflix starting Oct. 4, also stars Michelle Dee, Tirso Cruz III, Bart Guingona, Katya Santos, and Carlo Tarobal, among others.
Meanwhile, Canlas, who said in an interview with Inquirer Entertainment that the “Dirty Linen” actor “is perfect for the role” of Joma, also expressed his appreciation for his “Nanay Dolly” through a recorded message that was aired recently on “Magandang Buhay.”
“[A]ng laki ng natulong mo na sa’kin (You’ve helped me so much already) ever since I was a kid. Like, you’ve always believed in me. And now that we’ve been working together and we see each other more often… mas lalong tumatatag ‘yung paniniwala ko sa sarili ko, ‘yung confidence ko (my belief in myself grows stronger, my confidence) because of people like you,” he said.
