‘Intense’: Oscars invites Dolly de Leon to be member of the Academy

Filipino Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, an honorary organization in the United States responsible for selecting the winners at the Oscars.
The award-winning actress is one of the 398 “distinguished artists and executives” who received an invitation from the organization, in hopes of promoting “representation, inclusion and equity.”
Casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, filmmakers, documentary producers, film executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, marketing and public relations officers, musicians, and production designers also received an invitation from the awards-giving body.
“The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines, and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide,” Academy President Janet Yang and Academy CEO Bill Kramer said in a statement.

Aside from de Leon, also included in the actors’ branch are “Everything Everywhere All At Once” star Stephanie Hsu, “Elvis” star Austin Butler, Bond Girl and Woman King actress Lashana Lynch. Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, on the other hand, also received an invitation to join the music branch.
Following the announcement, de Leon expressed her shock over receiving the accolade on her official Twitter page, in response to Hollywood journalist Janet Nepales.
“Intense,” she said.

The actress is set to star as Molly in the upcoming film “A Very Good Girl” with Kathryn Bernardo.
De Leon was also cast in an untitled Antonette Jadaone-helmed project and American series “Nine Perfect Strangers” with Nicole Kidman. She will also appear in several Holloywood films and a series set in Germany, although she remained tight-lipped about the details.
The Filipino actress was nominated to the best supporting actress category in the Golden Globe Awards, held last January 11, for her role as Abigail in “Triangle of Sadness,” but she lost to Angela Bassett who played the role of Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Days following this, the Oscars announced the list of nominees for best supporting actress 95th Academy Awards, but did not include de Leon in the roster. But while she said that she initially “felt bad” for the snub, she immediately got over it as all the other nominees were just as deserving of the nomination. The award eventually went to Jamie Lee Curtis of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” who de Leon was apparently rooting for.
Aside from these, De Leon’s acclaimed performance in the film also received several recognitions including the best supporting performer award at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, best supporting actress nomination at the 2022 Satellite Awards, while being longlisted at the British Academy Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, also for the supporting actress category.
