Showbiz Roundup: Patrick Guzman’s death; Leren Bautista vs Andrea Brillantes; Dennis Padilla’s Father’s Day
The death of former actor Patrick Guzman brought local showbiz into a sort of 90’s nostalgia, while a mention of Andrea Brillantes by commenters on the Facebook page of beauty queen-turned-politician Leren Bautista was enough to blow her top off. On the other hand, Dennis Padilla lamented that he only received food with not even a note from his children with Marjorie Barretto on Father’s Day.
But the biggest news that caught headlines was of ABS-CBN noontime show “It’s Showtime” shifting to GMA’s GTV. Here are the biggest stories of INQUIRER.net’s entertainment section from June 16 to 22.
Patrick Guzman, 55
Former actor Patrick Guzman, who starred in several films in the 1990s, died at 55, which was confirmed by friends in the entertainment industry. No cause of death was announced.
Guzman, who was based in Canada, was remembered by actor-singer Ogie Alcasid with whom he worked in a number of projects together, as per the latter’s Instagram page last June 17. Alcasid appeared to have taken down the post, but screenshots of it have already been re-uploaded on social media.
Actor-filmmaker Beverly Vergel also paid tribute to Guzman as she recalled his starring role in the comedy film she directed, through her Instagram page.

‘Amaccana’
Former beauty queen, now Los Baños, Laguna councilor Leren Mae Bautista seemingly could no longer hold herself back as she responded to netizens who mentioned actress Andrea Brillantes in comments on her Facebook posts.
Bautista, who was earlier accused of being the supposed third party in Brillantes and Ricci Rivero’s breakup, was asking for mobile bar recommendations via her Facebook page last June 15, and one commenter could not help but tag Brillantes in the post.
“Andrea Brillantes, pa-help po. May alam [ka] kung saan?” the netizen said.
Bautista then replied, “Amaccana.”
Both comments were already taken down, but screenshots of the comments have been re-uploaded on social media. Aside from Brillantes, some netizens also noticeably made mention of Rivero in the comments section.
Brillantes and Rivero’s split was confirmed by the latter last June 9, as he asked the public to respect their decision to keep the breakup private and “preserve what’s left of [their] friendship.”
While Rivero did not immediately disclose the reason behind the breakup, he was accused of cheating on Brillantes as he earlier shared a photo of himself taken and posted by Bautista. Rivero and Bautista were also together on his birthday, giving away food packs in Los Baños where she serves as a municipal councilor.
Bautista later dismissed the third party accusations against her, noting that these claims “are entirely false and have no basis in reality.” She also clarified that her outreach activity with Rivero “is not an indication of a romantic relationship between them,” but part of her “ongoing efforts to serve the people and contribute to the welfare of her community.”
Brillantes, meanwhile, confessed that while she is doing okay, she still hasn’t fully healed from her recent heartbreak.

No Father’s Day greeting
Dennis Padilla revealed to Ogie Diaz that his children Julia, Claudia and Leon sent him food on Father’s Day, but the actor lamented that the gesture lost its taste as his children did not even attach a note or greetings.
Diaz appeared to have reached out to Padilla who then opened up about his celebration of the occasion this year, as per the comedian-talent manager’s vlog last June 19.
“According to Dennis, hindi siya binati ng kanyang mga anak nitong Father’s Day. Buong araw daw siya naghintay,” Diaz said. “Pero nagpa-deliver naman ng food ang magkakapatid, pero wala ni-kapirasong greeting o note para batiin siya ng ‘Happy Father’s Day.’ ‘Yung note o message daw ang kanyang inaasahan kaysa sa anumang bagay.”
Padilla also sent Diaz a photo of the former’s letter to his children, which was the same letter Padilla posted but later took down from his Instagram page in June last year.
The actor further told Diaz that he persistently prays for the forgiveness of his children and that he will patiently wait until they are ready to talk to him again.
“Sabi nga ni Dennis, ‘Pare, matanda na ako. Sana mapagbigyan ako ng mga anak ko,’” Diaz quoted Padilla as saying.
Meanwhile, Padilla also showed through his Instagram page a throwback photo of him with his kids as well as a photo quote about family. “No family is perfect. We argue, we fight, we even stop talking to each other at times but in the end, family is family. The love will always be there,” his post read.
Julia, Claudia and Leon are Padilla’s children with his ex-wife, actress Marjorie Barretto.

TVJ hints on new show
Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon (TVJ) and the other original “Eat Bulaga” mainstays were once again seen live altogether, albeit on social media, giving a glimpse of their preparations for their upcoming show in TV5.
The trio, along with Jose Manalo, Allan K, Paolo Ballesteros, Wally Bayola and Ryan Agoncillo, said hi to their fans through TVJ’s Facebook page last June 14. The TV hosts showed themselves having their first lunch in the network’s studio while they were on a break from a photo shoot.
“This is our first day na nagsama-sama ang mga Dabarkads dito sa TV5, and we’re taking videos and pictures para sa paghahanda ng debut ng mga Dabarkads sa Kapatid network,” said Agoncillo, who was holding the camera. “Malapit na malapit na ‘yan. Pakaabangan ninyo dahil kami excited na excited na rin.”
Agoncillo also addressed the viewers, “I hope masarap ang lunch niyo today. Kami, ito, ine-enjoy ang aming first lunch with TV5.”
TVJ and the other original “Eat Bulaga” mainstays announced their disengagement from production company TAPE last May 31. The hosts’ transfer to TV5 was then confirmed on June 7.
Baby No. 5 no more?
Just days after Drew Arellano and Iya Villania teased fans about trying for baby no. 5, the “Byahe ni Drew” host said he and his wife are already happy with just four children.
During an interview with broadcast journalist Pia Arcangel, which was uploaded on GMA Integrated News’ official YouTube channel last June 14, Arellano revealed that he and his wife initially planned to have just two children, but their kids Alana and Astro came at an unexpected time.
Since the celebrity couple wanted to have a daughter, they decided to give it another shot in hopes of getting lucky the third time.
“Kung babae, edi okay na. So, we thought ‘yun na ‘yun. By the way, we weren’t vocal about this. [It doesn’t mean] that we didn’t want a fourth one, kusang nangyari na lang din. Duday and Astro happened during the pandemic. What a blessing,” he said, referring to his daughter Alana using her nickname.
“Anyway, we were praying for a girl to the point na it was the only kid na hindi namin inalam ang gender. Not until lumabas na. And then the whole time, Iya thought na ‘lalaki na naman ‘to.’ It was during the pandemic in 2020. I couldn’t go to the delivery room, so I was just waiting sa room namin and then, dinala na ‘yung baby and I was like ‘color pink!’” he continued.
As a father-of-four, Arellano also admitted that it’s “different” to raise a baby girl since they’re harder for parents to resist, especially when it comes to showing affection.
But when the host was asked if there’s a chance that he and his wife are planning to have a fifth child in the future, he quipped: “I think my wife is waiting for me to undergo vasectomy already,” before laughing with Arcangel. “Okay na, we’re good,” he continued.
Arellano and Villania tied the knot in January 2014 after being in a relationship for 10 years. They have four children together, Antonio Primo (2016), Alonzo Leon (2018), Alana Lauren (2020), and Astro Phoenix (2022).

‘It’s Showtime’s’ new home
After getting bumped off its original airtime on TV5, ABS-CBN has announced that “It’s Showtime” will end its noontime run on the Kapatid Network as the variety show moves over to GMA’s GTV Channel starting July 1.
The network made the announcement through an official statement released on June 20, wherein it expressed its “heartfelt appreciation” to TV5 chairman Manny Pangilinan for the networks’ content partnership.
“With the new programming movement in TV5, we are sad to announce that ‘It’s Showtime’ will no longer be seen on TV5 beginning 1 July 2023,” the statement read, apparently referring to the upcoming show of original “Eat Bulaga” mainstays TVJ on the Kapatid network.
“We value the meaningful relationship we have built and nurtured with our audience in the noontime slot. It is for this reason that we have respectfully declined the 4:30 p.m. time slot offered by TV5 for the show,” its statement further read.
ABS-CBN then stated that aside from its platforms, “It’s Showtime” will continue its noontime run on GTV Channel, a free-to-air television network owned by GMA.
The contract of “It’s Showtime” with TV5 is set to expire by the end of June.
With this recent development, all three programs — TVJ’s Dabarkads on TV5, the revamped “Eat Bulaga” on GMA7, and “It’s Showtime” on GNTV” — will go head-to-head as they are scheduled for the noontime slot on their respective channels.
Meanwhile, TVJ’s noontime show will be broadcast on TV5 starting July 1, although Vic said if he had the choice, it would be named as “Eat Bulaga” amid their legal battle with production company TAPE Inc. EDV
