LOOK: The most buzzworthy looks on the 2023 Met Gala red carpet
The late Karl Lagerfeld is considered one of the titans of high fashion, whose aegis spawned the avant-garde genre, characterized by over-the-top accessories and the use of fur in his creations. And though it has been four years since his death due to pancreatic cancer, the German fashion powerhouse’s unapologetic vision of beauty was the center of attention in this year’s Met Gala.
The annual A-list event, organized by Vogue magazine which is helmed by Lagerfeld’s personal friend Anna Wintour, featured celebrities who were expected to sashay on the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York after a certain style. This year’s theme honors the quintessential style of the fashion icon, titled, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.”
Thus, some attendees showed up in iterations of Lagerfeld’s sense of fashion. Take a peek at some of the looks served by celebrities in what is dubbed as the “Super Bowl of Fashion.”
Anne Hathaway
Perhaps, one of the most noteworthy celebrities of the night was Anne Hathaway who flaunted her statuesque figure to a tee with her body-hugging white Versace tweed cut-out gown, strategically held together by huge pearl-encrusted safety pins. The brunette stunner, showing up in a half ponytail and a sparkly choker, has always been a favorite among fashion critics and enthusiasts alike. But on gala night, she proved once again that she’s a force to reckon with.
Doja Cat
It is not a Doja Cat moment if the singer doesn’t give a middle finger to the staid rules of fashion. And she didn’t disappoint as she went full feline on the red carpet in honor of Lagerfeld’s white Burmese cat, Choupette. The Oscar de la Renta silver number hugged her curves in all the right places, as its cat eared-hood gave an impression of a sensual yet classy feline. The “Kiss Me More” hitmaker didn’t hesitate to take her look up a notch with prosthetics, to make her features resemble a fierce kitty. Meow!

Fresh from her Baeksang Awards victory, Song Hye-kyo proved why she’s one of South Korea’s most beautiful faces in her blush pink gown adorned with silver accents that accentuated her lean figure. The actress’ outfit was bereft of accessories, save for a silver hair clip which adorned her hime haircut.

Who could ignore Jared Leto when he basically towered everyone else in the room with his giant cat costume? Leto turned heads as soon as he stepped on the red carpet donning a gigantic, furry tribute to the fashion icon’s Choupette. The “Morbius” star took the feline-inspired garb to camp heaven, complete with a mascot-like cat head that mimicked the kitty’s entrancing blue-eyed features.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner proved that she’s one of the favorites of the Met Gala red carpet as she paid a faithful homage to Lagerfeld’s black-and-white uniform — while looking like a bombshell in the no-pants trend. The reality show icon was every inch hypnotizing in a sparkly, black Marc Jacobs bodysuit covered in sequins until the final hem. Considered as one of the titan’s signature pieces for Chanel, the classic preppy Peter Pan-collared dress was transformed into a sexy piece with the dramatic sequined sleeves giving an impression of a dramatic cape.
Blackpink’s Jennie
The Blackpink bombshell, who’s affectionately dubbed as the “Human Chanel” by fans and media outlets, looked like a pin-up model in a vintage Chanel white minidress pulled from the French fashion house’s 90’s collection. Another celebrity who did fashion titan’s knack for black and white justice, the classic piece was given a more modern twist with black gloves, black belt accented with a white rose, white rose headband, black tights, and black pumps.
Gigi Hadid
Another Met Gala darling, Gigi Hadid went the edgier route as she donned a custom-made all-black dress by Givenchy that is completely sheer down to its bodice. The strapless bustier was accented with a sheer black fabric draped over one of her shoulders, which extended into a foot-long train. The sexy ensemble became even more daring with its hip cutouts and sheer bodice accented with rosette-inspired embroidery.
Amanda Seyfried
The “Mean Girls” took a bold leap from the Karl Lagerfeld theme, without losing the essence of the late titan’s avant garde take on fashion, which can be seen in her custom-made, almost naked chainmail mini dress. Seyfried’s signature elegant image was transformed into a ravishing looker with the help of renowned Elizabeth Stewart, thanks to the ensemble’s beadwork that added another layer to her skin-tone corset, which was seen underneath the dress. The look was finished off with matching gold high heels and silver jewelry — often viewed as a death sentence to warm skin tones — but which she successfully pulled off.
Rihanna
The “Shut Up and Drive” hitmaker might have arrived fashionably late on the red carpet, but her dramatic Maison Valentino ballgown with rosette-decked out sleeves is clear proof of why she’s one of the favorites in the star-studded event. The award-winning singer, who was accompanied by her partner A$AP Rocky, looked like a breathtaking modern jewel in a gown accented with a sweeping train, white spectacles adorned with faux eyelashes, and opera-length fingerless gloves.
Lil Nas X
Known for his bold fashion choices, Lil Nas X also captured the attention of fashion enthusiasts with another faithful yet bold interpretation of Choupette. This time, the singer was covered in silver paint and gemstones from head to toe, while donning a silver thong and chunky platform boots. His bold silver number was finished off with gemstone-encrusted nails, glittery silver makeup, and a mask decked out with silver accents, gemstones, and pearls which extended until his upper chest.
Lily Collins
Lily Collins was another favorite of this year’s Met Gala as she donned a dramatic ivory and black ballgown — accented with silver sequin letters spelling out “KARL” on the sheer black train. The retro-inspired white corset top was adorned with separate draped sleeves, while the look was put together with silver accessories which added an almost glowing effect to her pale complexion.
Erykah Badu
The singer-songwriter emerged as a dark horse of this year’s fashion Super Bowl as she paid homage to the late Chanel creative director through an all-white dress covered in fur from head to toe. The bold statement look donned several jeweled pieces including giant necklaces, a variety of silver and gemstone-encrusted rings, blue crystal-accented pieces, and giant metal pieces that stood as the ensemble’s centerpiece. Majority of the singer’s face was covered, to which she made her accessories do most of the talking.
Jackson Wang
Known for being a formidable sex god onstage, Jackson Wang was one of the celebrities who did Karl Lagerfeld’s uniform justice — which almost felt like every inch of the German fashion designer himself. The GOT7 member traded his usual abs-baring pieces to a covered yet modern take to his signature pieces with a black military jacket, sunglasses, black gloves, and even his ash blonde swept up hairdo.
