As one-half of JaDine, Nadine Lustre admits not liking ‘competition’ with KathNiel, LizQuen
Despite being one-half of the popular JaDine loveteam, Nadine Lustre revealed that she wasn’t fond of the “competition” aspect with other popular love teams, such as that of KathNiel (Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla) and LizQuen (Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil) back then.
Lustre made the revelation during a lie detector test on Bea Alonzo’s vlog uploaded on her YouTube channel on Saturday, April 15, where the “Deleter” star was asked if she ever felt there was a competition between the JaDine, KathNiel, and LizQuen love teams.
The award-winning actress was part of the JaDine onscreen pairing with her ex-boyfriend, singer-actor James Reid, who just recently seemingly confirmed his relationship with Filipino-British model Issa Pressman last March 2023.
“You were part of one of the most popular loveteams in your generation. Do you think na nakipag-compete ka sa KathNiel and LizQuen?” Alonzo asked Lustre.
“I didn’t like that there was a competing aspect to it. Parang sa akin back then, hindi ko nagegets bakit may ganoon so I was more of just doing what I have to do. Nafe-feel ko lang talaga na pinagco-compete kami ng mga tao pero hindi ko siya inisip,” she said in response.

For me back then, I didn’t understand why there had to be something like that so I was more of just doing what I have to do. I felt that people were trying to pit us against each other, but I wasn’t thinking of it.)

“Ayoko [ng competition sa amin]. Parang I was really just doing my own thing. Hindi ko rin gets bakit kailangan may competition. Even until now, nakikita ko siya sa ibang loveteams [ngayon],” she said.
(I don’t want to be in competition with them. I was really just doing my own thing. I don’t get why there needs to be a competition between us. Even until now, I see it among the loveteams today.)
Alonzo then agreed with the actress’ remarks, noting that empowerment should be the norm among loveteams in the showbiz industry, to which the “Dance with Danger” singer agreed.
During the interview, Lustre was also asked if she has a hard time letting go of “past hurts” to which she replied, “yes and no.” Seconds after, she immediately laughed before changing her answer to “yes.”
“Sige na nga, yes na. Kapag ako, kunwari, may friend ako na nag-betray ako, nahuhurt talaga ako kasi ‘yung treatment sa tao, parang binigay ko lahat sa iyo,” she said, although she didn’t disclose any moments in her life where she felt betrayed.
The “Ulan” star also admitted that it’s “easier” to get into a relationship with someone that is not in showbiz, as she noted that her boyfriend, Filipino-French entrepreneur Christophe Bariou, is her “anchor” despite the “crazy” entertainment industry.
“Kasi walang influence ng ibang tao. Si Chris ang anchor ko labas ng showbiz which is something that I need. Pag nasa showbiz ka kasi, sometimes it gets too loud. It gets too noisy. Siya ‘yung [humahatak] sa akin when it gets too crazy,” she added.
(There are no influences from other people. Chris is my anchor outside of showbiz which is something that I need. Because when you’re in showbiz, sometimes it gets too loud. It gets too noisy. He’s the one who brings me back when it gets too crazy.)
Reid also spoke about the concept of loveteams in November 2022 during a “Fun With Dumb” podcast with content creator duo Dumbfounded, where he shared that he did “six movies and three TV shows” with Lustre.
“In the Philippines, there’s this thing called ‘love team’ where they get two actors and they put them together, and if the audience likes the chemistry every project you do after that it’s always with that same person,” he said. “You can’t [stop it]. Once they ship you and there are fans behind, it’s unstoppable. There’s nothing you can do about it.” EDV
