What these celebrities gave up for Holy Week

Since Holy Week was a time for reflection and penitence, what did our celebrity respondents willingly give up as a form of self-sacrifice? Their answers:

Chris Martinez

More than give up on something, I hoped to do more, like exercise. As a form of penitence, I took long walks. It was actually dual purpose: I wanted to become more fit, tapos pinahirapan ko sarili ko for Holy Week. Also, I hoped to give up eating meat and eat less of the sugary stuff. I really wanted to lose more weight so that, you know, mag-mukhang-bata.

I cannot remember anymore how far back, but I’ve been doing this yearly— going to 20 different churches to pray. I hear Mass every day, but I wanted to go to as many of these religious places as possible because I’ve always liked the feel of churches. I wish that, with all the sacrifices that Christ had to go through, there will be positive changes in people.

There was nothing I was willing to give up. Rather, I hoped to give more, like more time with God by praying and reading my Bible, also to be a better person, and just follow whatever God has planned for me. It’s important to sit back and rest from time to time, so that we will be able to hear whatever message He is sending us on what we still need to change in our lives. He knows best.

I sacrificed by not going on an outing this Holy Week. At my age now, I’ve already had enough good experiences at the beach. I needed to rest and reflect more, especially because I went through a lot during the first two years of the pandemic. I wanted to be alone, for a change.

XiloI chose to stay home this Holy Week in order to reflect and pray. I’m not really a partygoer, or the type who prefers to be away all the time. It’s just that I’ve been very busy lately, and there were so many things to do.

As a form of self-sacrifice, I refrained from drinking red wine. Luke (my boyfriend) and I always drink wine while eating or before going to bed at night. I really enjoy it, but I let go of it this time.

I usually refrain from engaging on social media as a form of sacrifice. But since I had to promote my movie during this period, I just let go of something else. I promised to give up eating pork because it’s something I’ve always enjoyed.

I didn’t use makeup during Holy Week. I don’t go out of the house without wearing makeup, so this was my ultimate sacrifice. I guess this was also good so my skin could rest from wearing makeup all day and all night because of work. INQ
