MANILA, Philippines—Another international beauty pageant has been launched, the Miss Chinese World contest, that aims to gather “young Chinese beauties from around the globe in the celebration and remembrance of Chinese culture, values and traditions.”

The Mutya ng Pilipinas organization called a press conference at the CWC Interiors in Taguig City on Wednesday, March 29, to announce the national pageant’s partnership with the newly established competition, which it said is “also a platform to promote goodwill and friendship among the participants.”

Aside from focusing on Chinese culture, the pageant accepts multiple entrants from a single country. Mutya ng Pilipinas Pres. Cory Quirino said the limit is up to five delegates per country.

“We asked them if we can send only two, and they agreed. A delegate should represent a city from that country,” she shared.

Mutya plucked Anie Uson, who represented the province of Pangasinan in the 50th anniversary edition held in 2018 where she finished in the Top 12, to be one of the representatives from the Philippines.

The other delegate is a pageant veteran from different organizations, Berjayneth Chee. She was crowned Miss Philippines Water in the 2018 Miss Philippines Earth pageant, and is now the reigning Miss Chinatown Philippines.

Quirino said Uson will represent “Metro Manila,” while Chee will carry “Misamis Oriental” in the inaugural edition of the Miss Chinese World pageant.

The new pageant is organized by Tan Sri Datuk Danny Ooi of Malaysia, who also founded the Miss Tourism International competition, with which the Mutya ng Pilipinas pageant has a longstanding partnership. Filipino queens have dominated the earlier-established competition with a record number of five winners.

The 2023 Miss Chinese World pageant will be held in Malaysia in May.  /ra
