MANILA, Philippines — A lawmaker is pushing for the passage of a bill declaring July 10 as “Filipino Fun Day” in honor of the late Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr., more popularly known as Dolphy.
Eastern Samar Representative Ben Evardone who heads the House committee on public information on Wednesday urged for the passage of House Bill 6392 and declaration of July 10 as “Filipino Fun Day” as tribute to Dolphy’s contributions to the entertainment industry.
Once passed, all public institutions and private business establishments will observe July 10 as a special non-working holiday, according to the bill.
Evardone said that such a tribute was well-deserved by Dolphy who was an “icon, a household name loved by everyone” and whose work showed Filipinos a good time.
“Even for just a day, let everyone, especially the Filipino workingman, have fun the Dolphy way,” he said.
Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. along with many other lawmakers on Wednesday, the day after Dolphy’s demise, offered prayers for the King of Comedy.
He said that they would discuss whether they could confer the Congressional Medal of Distinction, its highest award, to Dolphy.
“I want to find out the parameters of the medal (but) definitely at the House, we feel Dolphy’s impact.”
