MANILA, Philippines—Like the rest of the nation, the gay community on Wednesday expressed its sadness over the death of Comedy King Rodolfo Vera Quizon, more popularly known as Dolphy.
Bemz Benedito, chairperson of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) group Ladlad, said that they were offering prayers for Dolphy who to them gave Filipino homosexuals a face through his roles in films such as the “Facifica Falayfay” ( in 1969), “Fefita Fofonga”y (1973), “Sarhento Fofonga”y (1974), “Ang Tatay Kong Nanay” (1978) and “Markova: Comfort Gay” (2001).
Benedito said that they appreciated Dolphy’s portrayal of Filipino homosexuals, which was not demeaning unlike the treatment of other comedians.
Rather than make fun of LGBTs, Benedito said that Dolphy instead showed the conditions of homosexuals in the country.
