David Licauco has nothing but gratitude as he said goodbye to his character Fidel in the hit TV series “Maria Clara at Ibarra,” which aired its final episode on Friday, Feb. 24.
The actor treated fans to the behind-the-scenes moments from their set and described the opportunity of playing the role as “an absolute honor,” through his Instagram page on Saturday, Feb. 25.
“Yesterday marks the end of MCI (‘Maria Clara at Ibarra’), with that, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who supported the show for the past [five] months,” he said. “To my MCI fam, I appreciate all of you.”
“To GMA, thank you so much for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity. It has been an absolute honor playing the role of Fidel,” he continued. “Lastly, to all the hardworking team behind the cam, I’ve learned a lot from each and everyone of you.”
Licauco then appeared to have teased fans as he concluded his post, “I am forever grateful! Fidel signing off….. for now.”
The comments section was flooded with congratulatory greetings and speculations that the TV series would be renewed for another season.
The finale of the historical drama saw Klay, portrayed by Barbie Forteza, returning to the real world and graduating from college. She was then given a scholarship to study medicine abroad, which she gladly accepted.
After finishing her studies, Klay returned to the Philippines and paid a visit to her alma mater where she met the counterpart of Dennis Trillo’s Ibarra and Julie Anne San Jose’s Maria Clara. Unlike their tragic ending in the novels, the characters of Trillo and San Jose ended up together in the real world and expecting their first child.
Klay also reunited with her love interest, Licauco’s Fidel, who came out of a portal. Surprised upon seeing Fidel, Klay said in a voiceover, “Nandito ka na (You’re already here), to which Fidel replied, “Nahanap na kita. Wala nang babu.” (I already found you. No more [goodbyes].)
The final episode of “Maria Clara at Ibarra” became a trending Twitter topic in the Philippines with over 180,000 tweets as of this writing. /ra
