Plus-size model ‘Queen’ Gracey finds space in PH fashion scene
MANILA, Philippines — It has been five years since “Queen” Gracey broke into the local fashion scene as a plus-size model, and she said in such a short period of time she has noticed changes in the industry, positive ones at that.
“It became a trend back in 2017 when I started. In the beginning it was kinda tough because being blended with regular models you feel kinda off, because you don’t look like them,” she told the Inquirer at the sidelines of the recent “launch party” hosted by a skin clinic at the Ortigas Center in Pasig City.
“It’s better now. Before there was a struggle with regards to acceptance. Now we have accepted it, embraced it,” she declared. She credits the success of American supermodel Ashley Graham and British top model Iskra Lawrence for the evolving beauty standards, and the changing face of fashion that society is starting to appreciate.
“I’m happy now that because of the models abroad like [Graham] and [Lawrence], we have embraced it. I feel much confident now. I’m socializing now, as you can see. I don’t feel shy or embarrassed or anything. I’m loving it now,” Gracey shared.
Graham was in the Philippines in early 2017 for the 2016 Miss Universe pageant to serve as a backstage correspondent during the coronation night, where full-figured Canadian candidate Sierra Bearchell advanced to the Top 9.

And for those who want to follow her footsteps, she advises self care measures such as observing a skin care regimen. “Start with choosing the right products for your skin, and you can go from there. Be inspired. If you are inspired you will do it religiously, and consistency is the key.” EDV
