‘Flowers’: Personal references behind Miley’s latest record-breaching feat
With the release of lead single “Flowers,” Miley Cyrus’ highly anticipated eighth studio album “Endless Summer Vacation,” set for release on March 10, is already showing its might in record-breaking fashion.
On Spotify, for instance, the uptempo track has become the most-streamed song in a single week in the music-streaming service’s history, racking up over 101,838,799 streams, as confirmed in a press release from the singer’s record label. The previous record holder was BTS’ “Butter,” with 99.37 million streams on its first week.
Cyrus teased the release of “Flowers” with cryptic posters that featured lyrics and a release date. She later dropped the first teaser on New Year’s Eve, along with the announcement of its title and release date.
Speculations
The ultimate self-love anthem of the year, Cyrus’ “Flowers” lyrics are pointed directly in Liam Hemsworth’s direction. Fans immediately began to speculate that the new song features several references to her high-profile relationship with her Australian ex-husband because the lyrics seem to point toward several events in the couple’s time together.
To refresh your memory, the former couple dated on and off for over a decade, then got married in 2018 before divorcing a year later.

Many also believe that the song’s self-love-themed title and chorus are a reference to Bruno Mars’ single “When I Was Your Man,” which Hemsworth is said to have dedicated to Cyrus while they were together.
In the music video, Cyrus can be seen dancing and exercising around a luxurious LA home, wearing an oversized black suit, which fans believe is similar to the one Hemsworth wore during a red-carpet appearance with Cyrus.
As of writing, both Cyrus and Hemsworth have not released a statement confirming or denying the rumors swirling around the popular single’s content. INQ
