Anna Kendrick recounted being in an emotionally abusive relationship with a former partner who was “for all intents and purposes, [her] husband,” and who she created embryos with.
The American actress-singer revealed this but opted not to name the former partner she was referring to, in a conversation with hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman for the “Armchair Expert” podcast on Monday, Jan. 9.
“I was with someone — this was somebody I lived with, for all intents and purposes, my husband. We had embryos together, this was my person,'” she shared. “And then about six years [into the relationship], about somewhere around there, I remember telling my brother, when things had first kind of gone down, ‘I’m living with a stranger. Like, I don’t know what’s happening.'”
Kendrick recalled how she would try to communicate with him but he would just yell at her until she was “curled in a ball, sobbing.” Kendrick also admitted that at some point in their relationship, she believed that she was just “crazy” and that she was “the one causing the problem.”
Despite her partner’s behavior, Kendrick tried to fix the relationship by going through a couple’s therapy, but her former partner later confessed to her that he had feelings for another woman.
“It wasn’t just the, ‘Oh, I’m losing a relationship.’ It was that I believed that if we broke up or, you know, if he left basically, it was a confirmation that it’s because I’m impossible, I’m lucky that he’s even tolerating my b*llsh*t,” Kendrick stated.
“There was an inherent thing of me being so rejectable that this person who loved me very deeply for six years, it suddenly occurred to him, how awful I was or something,” she continued. “The shame, that lingers much longer.”
Kendrick then started seeing therapists on her own and eventually learned how to “draw boundaries.” Kendrick said that what she had been through was “really hard and scary” but seeking help was a decision that “ended up being very wonderful things for [her] in the long run.”
Kendrick’s last known public relationship was with American actor Bill Hader who she reportedly dated for over a year. The “Pitch Perfect” star also dated filmmaker Edgar Wright from 2009 to 2013; and cinematographer Ben Richardson from 2014 to 2020. Before Richardson, Kendrick was briefly linked to American actor Jake Gyllenhaal. EDV
