MANILA, Philippines — For reigning Miss Philippines Earth Jenny Ramp, self-care is one of the most important things for a person. And a handful of her fellow beauty titleholders agree with her.

“It may be a really hard journey, but once you get used to it, once you start having the self respect and the self love for yourself, it gets easier every day,” Ramp told the Inquirer at the sidelines of the opening of The Pretty You Prime in Mandaluyong City on Sept. 6.

For reigning Miss Continentes Unidos Camelle Mercado, though, it may still be achieved through seemingly mundane things.

“Maybe it’s just like going out to take a breather, or like reading a book to refresh your mind. It’s just as simple as that. For me, that’s self-care,” she said.

Beatrice Santos, who bagged the Miss Makati crown in 2019 at the age of 18, said, “Self-care is being confident of yourself, of your skin, on how you live, and then being positive towards others, and then especially yourself.”

For her part, 2021 Miss International Queen Philippines Patricia Payumo said making time for oneself is self-care. “It is the most important gift that you can give to yourself if you can spend some time for yourself, to nourish what you have, and to make everything more meaningful,” she said.

Men also have to practice self-care, according to reigning Mister Universal World Philippines Hanz Sandoval.

“It is how you love yourself, what you do for yourself to be confident, and to express your inner beauty to the public,” he said.

And for the Filipino king, he may inspire others to practice it by harnessing the power of social media, “by posting my different techniques and routine every day on how I take care of myself.”

Ramp and Payumo agreed with Sandoval on the value of having a daily routine for self-care.

“It’s so important for everyone to learn what is their own self-care routine, whether it’s skincare or pamper days, especially at clinics, it will definitely help their self esteem,” said Ramp.

Sandoval will represent the Philippines in the 2022 Mister Universal World contest in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates in October, while Ramp will compete in the 2022 Miss Earth pageant which will be held in the Philippines in November. JB
