THE Sorptimists are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year. Mariquita Castelo founded the country’s first Soroptimist Club, which received its charter on May 5, 1966 in Malacañang. It’s now known as the Soroptimist International of the Philippine Region, with 2,000 members.

Last Tuesday, the special guests of the Women in Media forum at Sofitel Philippine Plaza included some of the leaders of the group, like Cora Manimbo, Yolanda Hernandez, Minda Garcia, Teresita Choa and Atty. Gladys Tiongco.
Garcia announced that the group will launch the Mariquita S. Castelo Leadership Award on Aug. 30 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, with a dinner musicale and fashion show. The award is open to all Soroptimists in the country. Deadline for nominations is on March 15, 2013. Call 532-3061.
