Rick Astley has re-created parts of the “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video after 35 years, and it appears he meant it when he said he was never gonna let down those who love the 1987 hit.
The English singer performed the song in an advertisement for the US-based car insurance company CSAA Insurance Group, as seen on its YouTube channel last Tuesday, Aug. 16.
The re-creation features Astley performing in similar clothes and locations as those in the original music video while workers of the insurance company dance along with him.
It then shows three versions of Astley wearing attires like those he wore in the music video, as one of them asks about his song, “Is this still a thing?” and the two other clones shrug in response.
Fans appear to be pleased with Astley re-creating the music video, with some saying they did not mind being “rickrolled.” Rickrolling refers to a YouTube meme or prank involving sending someone an impromptu link leading to the “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video and tricking them into watching it.
“This is going to blow up. Give the guy who thought about this a raise!” one Gigi said.
“This is the remake we always deserved,” another netizen, DefageLion, quipped.
“I don’t care if I just Rickrolled myself. This is so cool and fun to see Rick Astley still has the moves,” one F4t Fr3ddy said.
“Never Gonna Give You Up” is a song by Astley released in 1987. Its music video was also dropped in the same year.
The song marked its 35th anniversary last July 27. At the time, Astley described the song as one that “got a life of [its] own at this point.” He also joked that it is now old enough to be President of the US, and expressed appreciation for those who support it. /ra
