‘100 Days’ tells a refreshing story

MANABAT. Teleserye’s bundle of joy.

Sonia Sillero, a retired teacher, is all praises for her favorite teleserye, “100 Days to Heaven”: “It’s very refreshing. The script is good; it simply relates the story and doesn’t force unbelievable and unrealistic twists on viewers the way the just-concluded ‘Mara Clara’ did. The director handles his actors well and makes you appreciate Jodi Sta. Maria’s ability as an actress. And, Xyriel Manabat is a bundle of joy – she’s amazing! This kid will go places!”

Renz Sevilla, theater practitioner: “A recent interview with an indie filmmaker has raised eyebrows in the local theater community.

“When he was asked why he uses stage actors in his films, he explained with a straight face that theater people are better to work with, because they don’t complain, act for practically peanuts, are never late, and cry when he wants them to. – Terrible choice of words!

Statement

“I’ve been in theater for almost two decades now, and this is the first time I heard someone hurt the very core of theater people’s sensibilities. It’s a reality that theater practitioners, performers and technical people alike, are paid much less than their counterparts in the movies and on TV. His statement implies that he employs them because they’re cheap—yet, he can make them do whatever he wants them to.

“In indie filmmaking, where budgets are tight, there’s nothing wrong with his reasoning – it’s practical. But, to describe this group of actors the way he figuratively did has made them seem like timawa. Theater actors don’t expect harsh statements like this from indie filmmakers. Sometimes, a simple ‘thank you,’ an acknowledgment, or a compliment is good enough for them. They deserve better.”

Letty Villarante, housewife: “Why are the camera shots taken of Sharon Cuneta on ‘The Biggest Loser’ limited to only around her chest? She has always been a frustrated ‘dieter,’ and the network’s big bosses shouldn’t have given in to her whims, like ‘pretending’ to have lost a lot of weight to host a program – that is specifically about losing weight!”
