“Black Mirror” is set to return for its highly-anticipated sixth season, three years since its latest episodes were released.

The dystopian drama, which last premiered on Netflix in June 2019, is working on new episodes and casting is now underway, as per an exclusive report by Variety yesterday, May 16.

A source close to the production stated that each new episode will be treated as an individual film. This is in line with recent installments of the series which had episodes exceeding an hour of runtime. Specific storylines are yet to be revealed as of writing.

Season six of “Black Mirror” is also expected to have more episodes than season five, which only had three episodes: “Striking Vipers” starring Anthony Mackie and Yahya Abdul-Matteen II, “Smithereens” with Andrew Scott and Topher Grace, and “Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too,” starring Miley Cyrus.

“Black Mirror” season six is the first to be released since creator Charlie Brooker and his creative partner Annabel Jones left the production company House of Tomorrow, which handled the series’ latest seasons.

The series is now produced by Brooker and Jones’ own production company Broke & Bones, which has investment and a deal with Netflix. Since its release, Broke & Bones has produced comedies and mockumentary specials such as “Death to 2020” and “Death to 2021,” among others.

Back in 2020, Brooker had cast doubt on the possibility of creating a new season of “Black Mirror,” saying he was unsure whether viewers could still “stomach” stories about “societies falling apart.”

The streaming company reportedly declined to give comment on news of a sixth season.

Aside from being a commercial hit, “Black Mirror” had also bagged several awards, including Emmys for Outstanding Television Movie for its episodes “San Junipero” (2016), “USS Callister” (2017) and “Bandersnatch” (2018). Dana Cruz/JB
