ABAYA. Her great films explore issues that many viewers wouldn’t otherwise take the time to understand and be involved in.

THESE days, you’re more likely to see headlines of local celebrities behaving badly than not. So it’s time we zero in on personalities whom viewers consider inspirational. Their adulatory takes:

“I admire Gloria Romero. She has been around in the film and TV industry for a long time and has contributed quality performances that only a few of the current generation of actors can equal. Her presence alone in a soap opera brings up the level of the show.” —Natasha dela Cruz, customer service representative

“Marilou Diaz-Abaya. She has consistently given us great films that explore issues that many viewers wouldn’t otherwise take the time to understand and be involved in. The way she directs them, you don’t end up taking sides, and yet you actually learn more!” —Marc Evangelista, college student

FEATURED STORIES

Interesting characters

“Adolf Alix Jr. His film, ‘Donsol,’ was great: Unique story and interesting characters. His directing technique is unusual and thorough. He puts much thought into his work—I want to see more of this kind of filmmaking in local cinema.” —Gregory Tan, developer

“Ricky Davao, because he’s a versatile actor. He acts not only on TV and in films, but also onstage. Action, comedy, drama—wherever you put him, you can expect a good performance. I like the fact that he doesn’t compromise, and that’s very inspiring, even to those of us who are not in the same line, but are also involved in something creative.” —Mary Ann Olivares, web designer

“Chin Chin Gutierrez is inspiring. I admire her commitment toward protecting the environment. I also like the fact that she has her own style. She’s her own person.” —Roland Sanchez, high school teacher

“One of the most inspirational celebrities is Nora Aunor. She’s been down many times, but she always gets back up. Unlike many of the celebrities today, she didn’t get a lot of breaks when she was starting out. She wasn’t related to anybody famous or powerful, she wasn’t rich, but she built her career herself and, even though she makes mistakes, she keeps working at it!” —Teresa Solomon, work-at-home mom
