Miss World has expressed support for the people of Ukraine during the 70th Miss World pageant today, March 17, amid the invasion of the country by Russia.

Miss World delegates, judges and in-person audiences raised candles as Miss World 2019 Toni-Ann Singh dedicated the song “The Prayer” for Ukrainians. The words “a prayer for peace” were also bannered onstage.

Miss World Ukraine 2016 Oleksandra Kucherenko, who is currently in Kyiv, also sent a message for the public.

“Today, I woke up at five to the sound of bomb explosions nearby. I pray to stop this war. I pray that children won’t die under fire anymore, that women won’t hide in bomb shelters and men won’t suffer on the front. I pray that we Ukrainians would live peaceful lives on our native land,” she said.

The Philippines’ bet in Miss World, Tracy Maureen Perez, ended her journey in the pageant as part of its top 13.

Perez competed with 97 other Miss World delegates but only the top 40 candidates were required to participate in the coronation night in Puerto Rico, due to health and safety considerations amid COVID-19. JB
