Cassy Legaspi’s biggest realization after wrapping up debut soap ‘First Yaya’

Because they hit it off well on the set of their debut series, “First Yaya,” Cassy has no qualms working again with JD Domagoso and is keeping her doors open to the possibility of “CassQuin” becoming a steady love team.
“I enjoyed working with JD because I was super comfortable with him. We’re both beginners, so in a way, we grew up together, because we always helped each other out. Of course I would love to work with him again,” she said at a recent video conference introducing her as the newest face of the haircare brand Palmolive.
Screen chemistry wasn’t an issue, Cassy said, because they were already friends before they began taping. “He’s a good friend, a good person. Chemistry-wise, we didn’t struggle. And we never had disagreements,” she said.
Both Kapuso artists are children of prominent celebrities: Cassy is the daughter of Carmina Villaroel and Zoren Legaspi; JD is Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s son. And with those connections come expectations. That’s why Cassy and JD made sure to have each other’s back at work.
“Our partnership worked because we always tried to lift each other up. We had a hard time with our Tagalog lines, but more so JD because he speaks fast. When that happens, I tell him to take his time and do it word for word. And when I get frustrated about not giving enough emotions, JD would cheer me up and urge me to relax,” she related.
Supportive parents
One of her favorite family bonding activities was watching “First Yaya” over dinner—even though it could get nerve-wracking at times. “I get nervous whenever I see my parents watching my scenes too intently. That always makes me wonder if my acting was OK. Was it bad?” she said.
“Much to my relief, most of their comments were actually encouraging. And sometimes they get pleasantly surprised that I was able to pull off certain scenes. Of course, I still have a lot of stuff to improve on, which my parents often remind me of,” Cassy added. “I do get embarrassed, though, when they see my kilig scenes, so I just cover my face.”

The 20-year-old actress is thankful that, despite the pandemic, projects and endorsements continue to pour in for her family. “I feel so humbled because it’s hard to find work in show biz these days. I’m glad that everyone gets to work and we make sure that we make the most out of every opportunity,” she said.
This time, it’s her twin brother, Mavy’s, time to go in a locked-in taping session for “I Left My Heart in Sorsogon.”
“He was confident at first. But as his departure date drew nearer and nearer, he began panicking about what he was supposed to do. So I stepped in and just talked about my experience when we did locked-in tapings,” she said. “Now we video call every day to check up on each other and talk about the scenes.”
Acting a viable path
While waiting for her next project, Cassy is using her free time to improve herself as an actress. “I’m relaunching my YouTube channel. I’m also taking up workshops on singing and dance. I’m working on myself. I want to be a flexible actress who can do drama, comedy or horror,” she said.
Cassy’s biggest realization after doing her first soap is that acting does seem a viable path for her. “After my first locked-in taping, I knew that I wanted to pursue acting as a career. I want to be an actress. I enjoyed it. It was exhausting, but I’m still smiling after. I love the feeling after shooting our scenes … the adrenaline. I don’t see it as work,” she said. “And I have no regrets choosing this path.” INQ
