Kim Chiu, Gabbi Garcia and their fellow celebrities congratulated Filipino Olympian Nesthy Petecio after she earned a silver medal in boxing at the Tokyo Olympics today, Aug. 3.

Petecio was beaten to the gold medal by Japan’s Sena Irie who won via unanimous decision in the women’s featherweight finals. Despite not taking home the gold, Petecio still made a historic victory as the first female Filipino boxer to win a medal in the Olympic Games.

Chiu acknowledged this milestone when she greeted the Olympian by showing a photo of Petecio on her Instagram Story.

“First Filipina to win a boxing medal for the Olympics! Congratulations [Nesthy Petecio],” Chiu said.

Meanwhile, Garcia said she is proud of the Filipina boxer as she congratulated her through a Twitter post.

“Nesthy for Silver! We are proud of you! CONGRATULATIONS!” the actress said.

Singer Ice Seguerra also congratulated Petecio by showing a photo of Petecio in the Olympics, as seen on his Instagram page.

“SILVER! Congratulations [Nesthy Petecio] for bringing pride to our country!” he said. “Thank you for the hard work. Yung puso ko nasa lalamunan ko the whole time (My heart was in my throat the whole time).”

Seguerra also urged Petecio to hold her head high after taking home the silver medal.

Petecio received greetings from many more celebrities, including Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray and actress-singer Saab Magalona, who both extended their congratulations.

Prior to Petecio’s silver medal victory, weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz took home the first Olympic gold medal for the Philippines on July 26. With Diaz and and Petecio’s wins, this marks the first time the Philippines will be finishing the Olympic games with multiple medalists since the 1932 Los Angeles Games.

More victories are expected to come for the Filipino team as boxers Carlo Paalam and Eumir Marcial are already guaranteed to win bronze medals in their respective divisions. JB
