MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City prosecutor’s office has recommended the filing of libel charges against a tabloid editor and writer in relation to a story about Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s fake lewd photos.
Bulgar entertainment editor Janice Navida and writer Melba Llanera were indicted for libel under Article 355 of the Revised Penal Code, according to the resolution of the Office of the City Prosecutor (OCP). The OCP likewise recommended the filing of cyberlibel against Navida.
The resolution dated March 11 was posted by Gray’s counsel Joji Alonso on Thursday night. The resolution was signed by Assistant City Prosecutor Jerome Christopher Feria.
“There was a finding of probable cause justifying a well-founded belief that the crime of libel and cyberlibel have been committed wherein both Navida and Llanera are liable,” Alonso said in her post.
The recommended bail for each respondent for libel was set at P30,000, and P48,000 for the cyberlibel charge.
Alonso added that Gray—who is a staunch advocate of women’s rights and responsible journalism—has welcomed the development.
“She remains firm against abusive media practices and would not waiver in championing causes that would bring justice and accountability.
The beauty queen in 2020 filed a complaint before the Quezon City prosecutor over the publication of the supposed fabricated photos. She also sought the help of the National Bureau of Investigation to identify the people behind the fake photos. INQ
