Alexandra Trese, the aswang-busting heroine created by Filipino adman Budjette Tan, is getting the animated treatment.
Streaming platform Netflix gave a first look at its adaptation of local comic book “Trese” today, Oct. 27.
The supernatural detective is gazing at the Metro Manila city skyline in one image, and in another still, she is wielding her magical kris Sinag.
The streaming platform has yet to announce a release date and could only say that it was “coming soon.” It first confirmed that it would turn the graphic novel into an animated series in 2018.
Fil-Am Jay Oliva (“Legend of Korra,” “Wonder Woman”) is both showrunner and director of the Netflix adaptation.
“Trese,” written by Tan and illustrated by Kajo Baldisimo, chronicles Alexandra Trese’s adventures as she solves mysteries that involve characters based on Philippine mythology and folklore.
The comics have become a cult hit in komiks circles. With sleek black-and-white illustrations, they give off a noir feel and are composed of standalone cases that Trese handles while also keeping the peace between the world of the living and the paranormal.
The graphic novel will soon have its release in the United States through Oregon-based publisher Ablaze. JB
