Jennylyn Mercado stepped up to defend fellow single mothers after a netizen tweeted a distasteful comment belittling women like them.
The actress took to Twitter yesterday, Aug. 31, to remind single moms that they are strong and powerful, and that they should ignore such negative comments.
“To all the single moms out there, Never let comments like this get to you. Having a kid early doesn’t make you less of a woman. In fact it’s the opposite. Being a single parent made us stronger than ever,” Mercado said.
Her tweet came with a screenshot of the said netizen’s comment, which read, “Respeto naman sa mga babaeng inanakan lang (Give some respect to the women who just got knocked up)!”
Kaya always hold your head up high.
We are more powerful than they think we are.— jennylyn mercado (@MercadoJen) August 31, 2020
“Mahirap maging nanay at tatay ng ating (mga) anak pero kinakaya natin (It is hard being both a mother and a father to our children, but we still manage),” Mercado stressed.
“Kaya (So) always hold your head up high. We are more powerful than they think we are,” she added in the following tweet.
Mercado also emphasized that she feels so sorry for those who belittle single mothers, noting that they have received all the criticisms yet they are still here “raising our kid(s) the best we can.”
“Whatever you say, You can and will never bring a strong woman down,” she stressed.
And for those people na minamaliit pa rin kami hanggang ngayon, I feel so sorry for you.
Lahat ng mga kritisismo sa pagkatao namin nasabi na samin, and yet here we are. Raising our kid(s) the best we can. Whatever you say, You can and will never bring a strong woman down.— jennylyn mercado (@MercadoJen) August 31, 2020
Mercado’s fans and fellow Twitter users showed their appreciation for the actress’ sentiments and likewise defended single mothers.
“[B]akit yung babae lagi ang jinajudge? di ba mas dapat yung lalaki din who did not man up and took the responsibility? haist, lipunan!” one Twitter user with the handle @charmed_bliss said.

Fellow actress Chynna Ortaleza, meanwhile, lauded Mercado for being a single mother and echoed the latter’s sentiments.
“Whoa! So meant yan (that is meant) to break down [strong-willed] single parents? Go Jen!” Ortaleza tweeted. “Hindi madali maging single parent at lalong hindi madali na maging maayos sa mga tao na ang may hurt or misunderstanding before. E Ikaw.. kinaya mo lahat yan. So APIR!”
(It is not easy being a single parent and it is even harder to be okay for people who are hurt or had misunderstandings before. But you, you got through all of those!)
