JM De Guzman helped give away relief goods to the locally stranded individuals (LSIs) in Manila North Harbor yesterday, Aug. 9.
The actor posted moments from the distribution on his Instagram page on the same day. Among the items he handed out were bags of rice, canned goods and hammocks.
However, De Guzman pointed out that the LSIs at the harbor still need 50 hammocks. Those interested in donating may contact one EJ Miranda (@ejaymiranda) on Instagram. Miranda organized the effort while officers from the Philippine Coast Guard also assisted in the distribution of goods.
Miranda explained on Instagram that he decided to donate to the LSIs after seeing images of them taken by photojournalist Ezra Acayan. The pictures showed the individuals living together in shipping containers at the harbor due to Metro Manila being placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) again.
President Rodrigo Duterte reimposed MECQ on Metro Manila, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal and Bulacan from Aug. 4 to 18. The decision came after medical societies across the country called for a “timeout” amid the surge of COVID-19 cases.
The Department of Health reported 3,109 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the country’s total to 129,913.
Prior to helping the LSIs, De Guzman also worked with the Philippine Air Force last June to provide relief goods to 150 persons with disability in Navotas City. NVG
